Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, will hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

The Getting Started page will provide information on eligibility and next steps.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

FPA

Proposals to conduct research and/or study in Brazil, either independently or as part of the candidate's current graduate program, will be considered. Affiliation with an academic institution is central to this type of project, as is the presentation of a well-thought-out research plan.  All applicants are required to demonstrate the relevance of their projects to the Brazil Fulbright Program's mandate, which is to enhance mutual understanding between the United States and Brazil.

Applicants who will have received a Ph.D. by December 31, 2022 should apply to the Fulbright Scholar Program, see www.cies.org.

All candidates must have an affiliation with an academic institution or research institute. Additional affiliations with non-profit organizations, archives, or governmental agencies are acceptable and may be desirable depending on the nature of the candidate's proposal. Final selection by the Commission is subject to confirmation of an affiliation. If necessary, the Commission will assist applicants in confirming a possible host institution affiliation or recommending alternate ones.

\n

Graduating seniors and recent graduates must affiliate with a Brazilian academic institution and register in at least one class, preferably two, per semester. Master's degree and Ph.D. candidates must also initiate contact with the host institution of preference before applying.

\n

All candidates are encouraged to state their host institution preferences in the application form.

\n

Letter of Affiliation:

\n

Letters of affiliation must accompany the application.

\n

We encourage candidates to contact the chosen Brazilian institution to discuss interests, project feasibility, and availability to host them for the proposed award period.

\n

Candidates should not wait until near the application deadline to contact the Brazilian institution of their choice to obtain a letter of invitation. If that will be the first time communicating with a potential Brazilian host, be aware that receiving a response can take longer than expected.

\n

The letter of invitation can include:

\n

- Indication that courses related to the applicant's interests will be available during the grant period (for graduating seniors and recent graduates only)

\n

- Confirmation of the Brazilian institution's interest in hosting the candidate

\n

- Confirmation that the candidate will have access to the institution's facilities and services

\n

- Information about project feasibility in regards to language skills, research clearance, and any further relevant information. Please see the Research Clearance section below for more details.

\n

- Information on how the proposed project can impact ongoing activities in the Brazilian host institution

\n

- Information about a possible collaboration with or support from other organizations that are part of the host affiliate network

\n

The above list aims to help the applicant for the conversations with a potential affiliate. The Commission does not require it to be in the letter, and while they can be helpful in the selection process, the lack of them will not damage any application.

\n

Letters can be in Portuguese or English. If the letter is in Portuguese, please submit a translated version and the original with the application.
