Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, will hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

The Getting Started page will provide information on eligibility and next steps.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

Non U.S. Citizens

2022-2023 Middle East and North Africa Program Information

The countries listed above are those in which it is anticipated that there will be grants for the current academic year. If the country that you are interested in is not listed, then currently there is no Fulbright U.S. Student Program in that country.

Selection for countries in the Middle East and North Africa will be made based on the quality of the applications, rather than per-country quotas. Distribution of awards to countries in the region may vary annually according to the caliber of the applicants. See the country summary for details.

English Teaching Assistant Programs are available to:

Algeria, Bahrain, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the West Bank.

Study/Research Award Programs are available to:

Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, United Arab Emirates.

Grants are not available to:

Gaza, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Qatar, Syria, Tunisia, or Yemen.

Multi-country proposals:

Multi-country applications are not accepted.

Affiliation:

Israel is the only country that requires affiliation letters, and will accept them during the semi-finalist stage. All the other study/research awards to the Middle East and North Africa recommend obtaining affiliation letters with an educational and/or research or other institution in the host country if possible. If this is not possible, it is best to identify appropriate host institutions in the application. However, the host country makes the final arrangements in placing grantees at the appropriate academic institutions. See the country summary for details.

Clearances:

Candidates are responsible for securing visa and research clearances, as required. In countries with Fulbright Commissions, assistance may be provided. Please note that clearance processing can be a lengthy process in some countries such as Egypt and Oman.

Dependents:

Dependent support varies. See country summary for details.
