Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

Awards are available to pursue a full-time Master’s Degree in Chinese Language and Culture (Division of International Sinology) at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). The program is taught in Mandarin.

NTHU has been consistently ranked as one of the premier universities in East Asia and widely recognized as the best incubator for future leaders in industries as well as academics. In the 2022 QS World University Rankings, NTHU is ranked within the top 200 universities in the world and the top 50 universities in Asia. NTHU has educated a wide range of notable alumni, including Nobel Prize laureates Chen-Ning Yang, Tsung-Dao Lee, and Yuan-Tseh Lee. Students from over 40 countries have chosen NTHU for its distinguished faculty, cutting-edge research, and world-class facilities. 

The Master’s degree program in Chinese Language and Culture is administered by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at NTHU in Taiwan. The Division of International Sinology offers exceptional educational and research resources, aimed at enhancing students’ proficiency of Chinese language to be Superior level (ACTFL) and fostering an understanding of introductory sinology, as demanded by the global community. The program places equal emphasis on improving language skills and cultural knowledge, while underscoring the complementarity of language learning and cultural cultivation, to deepen students' understanding of Chinese history and culture. 

The Master degree program will also afford students with the opportunity to engage in dialogue and exchange ideas with experts and scholars from diverse nations, primarily through special lectures, international conferences, workshops, scholarly interviews, fieldwork, and other relevant activities. 

Grant recipients are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of Chinese-language internship in a relevant professional field, and complete a four-hour weekly English teaching assistant internship to have more interaction with local students for deeper cultural understanding. This program will offer various online or on-site teaching or administrative assistant positions, depending on local or international collaboration, such as bilingual language exchange, historical and cultural guidance, among others. 

The award is co-sponsored by the National Tsing Hua University.

The grant is initially awarded for 12 months; renewal for the second and third year is dependent upon the grantee’s academic success with a minimum GPA of 3.7 (A) on a 4.3 scale. 

Grants begin in September, 2024 prior to the FSE Welcome Reception (usually the Friday after Labor Day).

Candidate Profile

Candidate must have received a Bachelor's degree prior to enrollment and intend to pursue a three-year Master's degree. Strong academic credentials in their area of specialization are expected. A good capacity for studying and living in a cross-cultural setting is necessary. Grantees cannot be accompanied by dependents.

Foreign Language Proficiency

The applicant’s Chinese proficiency of CEFR B1 or its equivalent is required. Advanced Mandarin study in Taiwan in the first year is required. CEFR B2 is expected at the beginning of the second year.

No letter of affiliation is required upon application. Candidates must be accepted by both the Fulbright commission in Taiwan and the university program. 

APPLICANTS MUST ALSO BE ACCEPTED BY THE UNIVERSITY. A separate application to the university is required. Applicants not only have to apply to the Fulbright award, but also MUST be accepted by the university. Please look up and respect the program application deadline for the university program. 

Once a Fulbright finalist gains admission to the master’s degree program, a copy of the admission letter must be provided to the commission.

The grant provides recipients with full tuition support at National Tsing Hua University, housing in a student dormitory, round trip airfare, a monthly living allowance, and national health insurance as long as the candidate maintains satisfactory academic standards. Tuition waiver for the number of credits required for graduation are granted to graduate students. Students may enroll for additional credits, but they will be responsible for the added tuition and fees.

Housing Arrangements

The Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan) will book the grantees in a hotel for the first four nights close to the office. The grantees are offered a one-time-only settling-in allowance.

The host institution will offer grantees a student dormitory at their university in a two-person dorm room.
