Award Profile

The Fulbright Chile Lithium Awards provide U.S. graduate students with the opportunity to conduct research in Chile on topics related to lithium systems, salars, and associated scientific and technological fields. Chile hosts some of the world’s most important lithium-bearing salt flats and has developed a growing research ecosystem focused on critical minerals, natural resource systems, and advanced technologies.

This award supports research projects carried out in collaboration with a leading Chilean research institution specializing in lithium and salar systems. Projects should contribute to advancing scientific understanding, technological development, or applied research related to lithium resources and their associated environmental, geological, and technological dimensions.

Preference is given to Master’s and Ph.D. students conducting thesis or dissertation research requiring fieldwork, data collection, laboratory collaboration, or institutional engagement in Chile. Graduating seniors and recent graduates may also be considered when proposing a research project that includes audited coursework supporting the methodological components of their project. Audited courses must be arranged with the host institution and do not carry academic credit.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the prospective host institution in advance to discuss project feasibility and academic alignment before submitting their application.

Areas of Interest

Applications are especially welcome in science and technology fields related to lithium systems and critical mineral research. Relevant areas include hydrogeology, geosciences, environmental sciences, remote sensing and geospatial analysis, chemical processes, electrochemistry, materials science, energy systems, and technologies associated with lithium extraction and processing.

These areas reflect current research priorities within Chile’s scientific efforts related to lithium and salar environments. Proposals should demonstrate clear relevance to lithium-related research and align with the scientific expertise and research agenda of the host institution.

All proposed projects must correspond to areas in which the host institution has expressed interest in collaboration, and applicants should ensure that their proposal clearly connects with the institution’s research strengths and ongoing initiatives.

Candidate Profile

This award prioritizes Master’s and doctoral candidates conducting thesis or dissertation research in Chile related to lithium systems, salars, and associated scientific or technological fields. At-Large candidates who have recently completed a terminal Master’s degree may also be considered. Applicants holding only a bachelor’s degree must demonstrate relevant professional or research experience if not currently enrolled in graduate study.

Proposed projects must demonstrate a clear need to conduct research in Chile and show relevance to ongoing scientific work related to lithium resources and salar environments. Applicants must establish formal affiliation with the designated host research institution prior to applying.

Strong candidates will present well-developed research proposals grounded in scientific or technical inquiry, demonstrate clear alignment with the host institution’s research priorities, and show potential for meaningful collaboration with Chilean researchers. Proposals should also articulate the broader relevance of the research to academic exchange and shared scientific interests between Chile and the United States.

Proficiency in Spanish may be helpful for fieldwork and institutional engagement but is not required.

What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?

Applicants are expected to research their host country. Application materials should indicate a clear commitment to the host country community and a description of how you will engage with it.

Discover Chile Through Fulbright: Why Choose Chile for Your Fulbright Experience?

Chile offers U.S. Students a compelling combination of academic excellence, advanced research infrastructure, geographic diversity, and strong institutional stability within a globally connected society.

As one of the longest-standing bilateral Fulbright commissions in Latin America (established in 1955), Fulbright Chile has supported more than 1,500 U.S. grantees and over 3,500 Chilean scholars, contributing to a sustained and productive binational academic partnership. By choosing Chile, you become part of a network defined by academic rigor, international collaboration, and long-term professional exchange.

A High-Impact Research Environment Across Disciplines

Chile has consolidated its science, technology, and innovation system through coordinated national policy frameworks and sustained public and private investment. The country’s research sector operates under a structured governance model led by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation and the National Council of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation for Development, ensuring strategic alignment between research priorities and national development goals.

Chile is internationally recognized for excellence in astronomy, engineering, Antarctic research, environmental and earth sciences, clean energy systems, digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and applied technologies. The country’s geographic conditions and institutional coordination position it as a global reference point in several of these fields.

Beyond STEM disciplines, Chile maintains strong research environments in public policy, education, public health, economics, development studies, cultural studies, governance, and the humanities, offering interdisciplinary opportunities for graduate-level research.

Chile’s research ecosystem includes approximately 50 accredited universities serving nearly 800,000 students, alongside government-funded research centers and private-sector innovation bodies. The country’s top universities consistently rank among the leading institutions in Latin America and appear prominently in global QS rankings, reinforcing Chile’s regional academic leadership.

Your Fulbright Experience in Chile

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program in Chile offers graduate students the opportunity to conduct research for up to nine months at Chilean universities and research institutions.

This experience supports academic advancement, expands professional networks, and strengthens international dialogue. Chilean institutions provide high-level academic mentorship, access to national data systems and research registries, established research centers, and long-standing academic partnerships with U.S. institutions.

Students benefit from integration into structured research communities and participation in ongoing academic dialogue within their host institutions.

Cultural Engagement Beyond the Research Project

Chile’s intellectual and cultural life extends well beyond academic institutions. The country hosts internationally recognized forums that convene scientists, innovators, policymakers, and public intellectuals to address global challenges and emerging ideas.

Students encounter a dynamic contemporary arts and theater scene, international film and literary festivals, a strong culture of public lectures and academic conferences, and a growing startup and innovation ecosystem.

Santiago serves as a modern metropolitan hub with expanding infrastructure and international connectivity, while university cities throughout the country offer close faculty-student interaction and vibrant academic communities.

Living in Chile means engaging with a society that values public dialogue, academic exchange, and international collaboration.

Practical Living Considerations

Chile offers reliable transportation systems, modern infrastructure, strong healthcare services, high internet connectivity, and a generally safe environment. Urban centers provide efficient public transportation networks and digital infrastructure that support academic work and research collaboration.

Students frequently note the welcoming nature of local communities and the relative ease of adapting to daily life. Whether based in Santiago or in a regional university city, Chile provides a setting conducive to focused research and meaningful professional engagement.

Fulbright U.S. Alumni Perspectives

U.S. Fulbright Alumni in Chile frequently describe their experience as professionally formative. Many emphasize the seriousness of institutional engagement and the accessibility of research networks. Others highlight the value of conducting advanced research fully in Spanish, expanding their regional expertise, and strengthening their academic credentials in Latin America.

The combination of structured academic culture and immersive social context often becomes one of the defining aspects of their Fulbright year.

Affiliation

Applicants must obtain a formal letter of affiliation or invitation from a designated contact at the National Institute for Lithium and Salars (INLiSa) prior to submitting the application.

Under this award, placements must be undertaken at INLiSa, the Chilean public research institution dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge, technological development, and interdisciplinary research related to lithium systems and salar environments. The affiliation letter does not represent a financial commitment; rather, it confirms the Institute’s interest in hosting and collaborating with the applicant.

The letter must confirm institutional support for the proposed project, indicate that the applicant’s academic background is appropriate for the planned research, and state that the proposed work is feasible within INLiSa’s research environment. It should also identify the relevant research unit or team and briefly describe the anticipated research activities aligned with the project outlined in the Fulbright application.

The affiliation plays a substantive role in the U.S. Student Program by establishing an active academic relationship. INLiSa must designate a faculty mentor or research contact who will provide guidance and oversight throughout the grant period.

Applicants are responsible for initiating contact with INLiSa in advance to discuss project feasibility and alignment with the Institute’s research priorities before requesting a formal letter of affiliation.
