Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

Award Profile

ETAs will be assigned as language-learning assistants and cultural ambassadors working up to 25 hours per week, but they will not be responsible for teaching entire courses. They will develop and lead language learning and other activities on American culture, history and values. They will design and lead cultural events, workshops, and activities that promote mutual understanding between the Unites States and Bolivia.

Orientation
Pre-Departure Orientation

As a condition of the grant, all grantees to Bolivia are required to participate in a Pre-Departure Orientation in the U.S. prior to the start of the grant. Grantees will receive an arrival briefing with the U.S. Embassy in Bolivia.

Candidate Profile

Candidates with degrees in English, Spanish, Education or TESOL with experience teaching or tutoring, and who have an interest in working in an international educational environment, are preferred. Other fields will be seriously considered if combined with teaching experience and/or coursework in TESOL.

Additional Information: Intermediate Spanish language proficiency is necessary, not only for the development of the assignment, but to communicate on a daily basis.

For the primary placement, ETAs will be individually placed at local universities in the greater La Paz and El Alto area. They will assist with English language instruction, but will not be responsible for teaching entire courses. Instead, they will contribute with their native English skills to enhance language instruction and provide additional cultural opportunities. Additionally, ETAs will provide language assistance at local American Space and/or EducationUSA offices as a secondary placement.  ETAs will be required to work at the primary location 70% of the time and assist the local American Space and/or EducationUSA offices for the remaining 30%.

Supplementary Project
Required

English Teaching Assistant responsibilities will be up to 25 hours per week. Therefore, grantees are expected to engage in other activities related to their personal, career, and/or educational interests. Applicants should consider a project that they intend to pursue if awarded the grant, keeping in mind that these activities should be flexible with respect to geographic location, since they will not know where they will be placed until placements are finalized. For example, grantees may pursue a course of study, conduct research on topics or issues related to Bolivia, engage in specific volunteer activities, or a combination of these activities. Grantees should plan to spend 10 to 15 hours per week on their supplementary project, with the understanding that their main responsibility is to assist at the university and American Space and/or EducationUSA offices.

Grantees are responsible for identifying housing options. The U.S. Embassy does not assist in locating or helping secure housing for U.S. Fulbright grantees, but is happy to answer any specific questions that grantees might have about potential housing. Host institutions should be the primary source of assistance in the housing search.
