Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, will hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

If you are a U.S. citizen and a professor or administrator at a U.S. institution and are interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholar Award, you will need to apply through CIES.

French language proficiency is necessary, not only for the development of the proposed project, but also in order to settle in easily and communicate on a daily basis. Higher level proficiency may be necessary depending on the requirements of the proposed project.

Since French is not often spoken in rural areas, a working knowledge of spoken Malagasy is needed by anyone planning anthropological, historical, and ethnological or other field research. Furthermore, archival research requires reading ability in Malagasy. Researchers can arrange tutoring to acquire a working knowledge of Malagasy.

Fulbright grantees should be aware of special health considerations and must take malaria prophylaxis if traveling to coastal areas or other areas of Madagascar where malaria is prevalent.

Grantees must also secure an extendable, one-month entry visa which mentions \"Prorogeable et Transformable en Long Sejour\" while in the U.S and specify the visa type requested as “Scientifique.\" Following the grantee's arrival in Madagascar, the U.S. Embassy will assist them in securing the long-term visa.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program in Madagascar aims to strengthen educational and cultural relationships between the United States and Madagascar.

The overall benefits to the U.S. participant include the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in supplementing classroom activities to English teaching/learning and acquiring a balanced view of the dynamics between teachers and students.

\n

Madagascar is the world’s second largest island country.  It is located off the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean and has an estimated population of 26 million.  The official language is Malagasy with 18 major ethnic dialects.

Selected applicants for this program will be placed in the country’s capital city of Antananarivo at public high schools where the U.S. Embassy routinely conducts English teaching-related programs.

\n

While host institutions may not be able to provide accommodations/housing for ETAs, the U.S. Embassy and the host institution will assist participants in identifying decent housing within the vicinity of their assignment neighborhood.

ETAs are expected to arrive between 2-4 weeks prior to the start of their assignment to attend an in-country orientation, finalize local visa applications, identify housing, and attend mandatory briefings with Embassy personnel.

Madagascar’s academic year for secondary schools is currently scheduled to begin in October 2022 and end in July 2023.

Prior experience in the country/region would be preferred, or at least previous interactions with people from Madagascar or individuals who have had substantial experience in the country.

ETAs spend approximately 20 hours per week assisting and supporting English secondary school teachers and working on additional projects.  ETA roles may include giving presentations on topics related to the United States, preparing classroom activities, modelling interactive activities with partner teachers, and/or encouraging students to communicate in English. ETAs may assist in a variety of academic formats such as one-on-one tutoring or co-teaching large groups. ETAs are also encouraged to create their own projects with institutions or communities.  Project may include, but are not limited to: environmental clubs, job fairs, girls’ groups, book clubs, cultural days, debate clubs, etc.

Involvement in American Spaces or EducationUSA activities is also a regular part of the ETA experience and will be scheduled into the ETA’s weekly schedule in coordination with the host institution.
