Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, will hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

If you are a U.S. citizen and a professor or administrator at a U.S. institution and are interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholar Award, you will need to apply through CIES.

The aim of the Study/Research Awards to Kazakhstan is to strengthen educational and cultural relations between the United States and Kazakhstan.

The Study/Research Awards give young U.S. scholars unique opportunities to carry out research in numerous fields related to the country's historical past or dynamic present day political, economic, or cultural developments. Scholars may also study unique aspects of Kazakhstan's geography, environment, and other technological specializations.

Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world with rich natural resources, a transitioning economy, and a multiethnic population. Kazakh and Russian are two major languages spoken in Kazakhstan and English is becoming a third official language.

Knowledge of the Russian or Kazakh language is recommended. Language proficiency commensurate with the nature of the proposed project is expected prior to commencing the grant. Applicants without relevant language skills should include in their proposals plans for language study before arriving in Kazakhstan. Soon upon arrival in the cities of their grant assignment, these grantees should start taking intensive Russian or Kazakh language classes. Regardless of language ability, all grantees are provided with a stipend to study a local language while in-country as part of their grant benefit.

All Fulbright Researchers in Kazakhstan must have an affiliation with a local university or educational institution. Applicants are encouraged to arrange affiliations and submit letters of invitation. Otherwise, they may indicate preferences for affiliation. When applicants do not indicate a host institution preference, the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy will seek the most appropriate placements based on research fields and university availability.

Research clearance is not needed, although some archives and libraries may require official letters from the U.S. Mission (Embassy & Consulate) in Kazakhstan.

The U.S. Mission in Kazakhstan will provide grantees and their dependents with diplomatic notes to apply for Kazakh visas. However, the U.S. Embassy cannot guarantee visa support for dependents in case visa regulations are changed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Since 2006, Kazakhstan has hosted over 60 American students as part of the Fulbright Program, the flagship international exchange program of the U.S. Government. As unofficial cultural ambassadors, these grantees live and teach English in cities and villages throughout Kazakhstan. Through their exchange, these Americans form powerful and enduring people-to-people ties with Kazakhstani students, colleagues, and community members.

In January of 2018, the United States committed to assist the Government of Kazakhstan achieve its goal to establish a tri-lingual (Kazakh, Russian, and English) society by 2050. Fulbright ETAs will increase English language proficiency of students and faculty, and assist in English language programming to enhance access to English and other educational and exchange opportunities throughout Kazakhstan.

Applications are welcome. Post is seeking flexible graduating seniors, recent graduates or Master’s degree students who demonstrate a high level of maturity and initiative to identify opportunities to improve the quality of English language teaching at the tertiary level. Post seeks native English-speakers who are resilient and who can teach university students and/or faculty. Higher education institutions and faculty accustomed to rote memorization benefit from innovative approaches to teaching, student-centered classrooms, project-based learning, and other pedagogical approaches to enhance English Language proficiency. Successful candidates must be articulate, fluent English speakers without dependents. Candidates with degrees in English, Education, TEFL/Applied Linguistics, or teaching STEAM in English are preferred, but candidates from all majors are welcome to apply. Some previous teaching/tutoring experience is preferred. Russian language skills also desirable.

The U.S. Mission in Kazakhstan will provide grantees with diplomatic notes to apply for Kazakh visas. No research clearance is required for Fulbright ETA grantees.

Placements: ETAs will be placed in cities outside the capital cities of Nur-Sultan (Astana) and Almaty. Previous placements have included Shymkent, Taraz, Pavlodar, Kyzylorda, Zhezkazgan, Aktau, Aktobe, Kostanay, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Karaganda, Uralsk, and Semey. All affiliation arrangements will be made by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy.

Host Placement Responsibilities and Expectations: ETAs will complete 20 hours per week of in-classroom assistant teaching, including all class preparation time and additional school-related activities at host institution. ETAs will generally assist in teaching conversational English and may be paired with a Kazakhstani co-teacher to instruct university students and/or faculty at the host institutions.

\n

Additional Responsibilities: Under the guidance of PAS, ETAs will also have the opportunity to participate in community outreach and cultural activities, such as directing reading and conversation groups at an American Space, working with English Access Microscholarship Students, and assisting PAS with a variety of cultural and educational opportunities. ETAs are encouraged to propose creative ideas for programming to engage students and other audiences, which should account for at least five hours of additional teaching or cultural outreach per week.
