U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, will hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date, and do not have a Ph.D. degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicants should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

If you are a U.S. citizen and a professor or administrator at a U.S. institution and are interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholar Award, you will need to apply through fulbrightscholars.org.

North Macedonia and the United States enjoy a cooperative relationship across a broad range of political, economic, cultural, military, and social issues.  The two have had good bilateral relations since North Macedonia gained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.  The United States formally recognized North Macedonia in 1994, and the countries established full diplomatic relations in 1995.  The United States strongly supports North Macedonia’s aspirations for full integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions and is committed to helping North Macedonia embrace inclusive democracy and citizen-responsive governance, fight corruption and discrimination, strengthen rule of law, become a stronger NATO ally and partner, strengthen and diversify its economy; promote media freedom; and build greater democratic institutions in a full, inclusive multi-ethnic society. 

North Macedonia is a great country to be placed as a Fulbright student researcher.   The citizens of North Macedonia are very hospitable and friendly toward U.S. citizens.  Fulbright student researchers can seek affiliation at any public, private, nongovernmental or government institutions.  

There are also five American Corners where Fulbright researchers can conduct different extracurricular activities.  Also, there are numerous of NGO and other professional associations where you can be part of a project or run your own activity. 

The English language among young population is at a very high level, however, a native speaker always can make a difference.  To be a Student researcher in North Macedonia it is not required to know the local languages.

North Macedonia is characterized with various natural beauties: high mountain massifs rich in flora and fauna, mountain rivers and tectonic lakes, numerous thermal springs, basins, and valleys.  Your experience in North Macedonia will make you return again.

Orientation
Pre-Departure and In-Country Orientation

All grantees are required to attend a pre-departure orientation in June or July as a condition of their grant.  The event is organized by IIE, virtual or in-person.

Candidate Profile

Candidates at all degree levels will be considered. Preference will be given to proposals that address issues of particular concern to North Macedonia, such as economic development, civil society, the political system, public services, rule of law, human rights, media and journalism, conflict resolution, agricultural sciences, medical sciences and information technology studies.

Applicants are encouraged to arrange affiliation and submit letters of invitation with their application. If an invitation is not available, they may indicate preferences for affiliation. When applicants do not indicate a host institution preference, the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy will seek the most appropriate placements.
