Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, will hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

The Getting Started page will provide information on eligibility and next steps.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

FPA

U.S. Professor/Administrator

If you are a U.S. citizen and a professor or administrator at a U.S. institution and are interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholar Award, you will need to apply through CIES.

To support your students in applying for a U.S. Student Program award, please connect with the Fulbright Program Adviser at your institution.

Non U.S. Citizens

If you are a non-U.S. citizen interested in applying for a Fulbright Award to the United States, you will need to apply through the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy in your home country. Find out more information on the Fulbright Visiting Scholar or Student Program.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers 7 study/research awards per academic year for U.S. citizens holding at least a bachelor’s degree to conduct research and/or to study at a Hungarian higher education institution. Applications are welcome in all fields. The academic year is from September to the end of May. Universities have extensive international connections, and offer many study programs in English. The research institutes of the Eötvös Loránd Research Network (formerly known as Hungarian Academy of Sciences network) also offer young researchers the most cutting-edge, up-to-date research opportunities. Affiliations with Hungarian state-run institutions are preferred.

\n

Hungary’s rich cultural traditions, competitive research and higher education institutions make our country an ideal place for young scholars to spend an academic year. Grantees enjoy robust support from the Hungarian Fulbright Commission all through their grant period. They are regularly invited to cultural enrichment programs so they get to know many different parts of the country, and as many educational and cultural institutions as possible.

The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest is the only music academy in the world that was founded by Franz Liszt. The piano virtuoso, composer, conductor, teacher, author and philanthropist established the institution in 1875. The Academy has always taken pride in meeting the standards set by its founders and revered professors. This means students encounter a special and demanding Hungarian style of teaching. Education here focuses on understanding the meaning of music and the art of ensemble playing. Those who enter the Liszt Academy know that attendance involves a serious commitment to a perfectionist approach to music. Studying here means hard and disciplined work under the guidance of professors who are renowned artists, visiting professors at other illustrious universities, and jury members of international competitions, for whom teaching is a passion. The Liszt Academy is proud to have outstanding, highly experienced professors. All classical instruments, singing/opera, jazz and folk music, orchestral/choral conducting, music pedagogy, composition are offered as majors - both on BA and MA level.

Applicants are welcome with strong music education background in one of the following: symphonic orchestral instruments, voice, jazz, music education, music history, composition, choir/orchestral conducting or folk music. Candidates are expected to show dedication in the traditional European values and music culture, and embrace the tradition of our ancestors: Ferenc Liszt, Béla Bartók, György Ligeti, Lipot Auer, David Popper, Sir Georg Solti and many more. We also expect of the candidates the willingness to participate in various ensembles and orchestras as performers as these subjects are highlighted areas in most of the curriculums of the Liszt Academy.

\n

High interest in visiting concerts is also preferable since the Liszt Academy is among the most prestigious concert venues in the region.

\n

In general, we also expect candidates to be open to new ideas, cultures and musical influences since our academy is one of the most diverse higher education institutions in Hungary with students, professors, lecturers and performers from all over the world.
