Award Profile
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program to Georgia provides up to 2 awards per academic year for U.S. citizens holding at least a BA to conduct individually designed research, engage in civic initiatives, or develop their talents in Georgia. Students may be affiliated with institutions of higher education, government institutions, non-governmental organizations, research institutions or think-tanks, cultural institutions, public organizations, media, etc. Grantees are expected to participate in activities organized by the U.S. Embassy throughout the year.
For student research projects within their field of professional and/or artistic expertise, the initiative could encompass research, consultations with experts, organizing exhibitions, producing written materials like articles and reviews, presenting at universities, the American Center, and education fairs, and involvement in public events.
U.S. Embassy Tbilisi's regional security office is restricting any travel to the occupied territories of Georgia - Abkhazia and the South Ossetia.

Orientation
All grantees are required to attend a pre-departure orientation in June or July as a condition of their grant as well as an in-country orientation in September.
Candidate Profile
Well-qualified candidates at all degree levels are welcome to apply. Candidates must be mature, self-motivated individuals who are capable of working independently with little supervision. Preference will be given to candidates interested in conducting research at a university/institution outside of the capital city. Candidates are encouraged to address issues of significance to contemporary Georgia, such as natural and social sciences, conflict studies, educational reform/internationalization, urban planning and landscape architecture, regional security, media literacy, and the humanities.
Grantees are expected to participate in activities organized by the U.S. Embassy throughout the year. They should also be prepared to serve as active representatives of the U.S. during their time in Georgia.

What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?
Situated at the strategically important crossroads where Europe meets Asia, Georgia has a unique and ancient cultural heritage and world-renowned cuisine. From green valleys with vineyards to old churches and watchtowers perched in stunning mountain scenery, Georgia’s natural beauty belies its modest size, and its legendary hospitality invites visitors to further explore the country and its rich history.
At the same time, life in Georgia is increasingly international and the country hosts global restaurants such as McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, and Domino's. Additionally international shopping including Gap, Zara, and L'occidente can be found in Tbilisi. Credit cards are widely used, Internet is widespread and fairly reliable, mobile services cover the whole country, and water is safe to drink. Conditions vary greatly between the larger cities and smaller towns and villages. Roads in cities are in good repair, and the main highway across the country links Tbilisi to the Black Sea resort town of Batumi. Georgia is exceptionally safe, with petty crime and burglary ranking very low. The capital city, Tbilisi is a very old city with a population of approximately 1 million people, with mild winters (almost no snow) and hot summers, with good in-city or inter-city transportation system. Taxis are also not very expensive.

Applicants are encouraged to arrange an affiliation and submit a letter of invitation. In the absence of an invitation, they may indicate preferences for affiliation, if any. Final decisions regarding placement will be made by the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Embassy.
