If you are a U.S. citizen, will hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date, and do not have a Ph.D. degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicants should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program in Singapore offers up to two awards to U.S. students for 10 months of study/research at a Singaporean host institution. Topics of particular interest include environmental issues, sustainable design, contemporary political and economic relations between the United States, Singapore and beyond, the challenges of misinformation and disinformation in East Asia Pacific, and issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Grantees planning to enroll in classes at a Singaporean university are advised to begin their grants in July 2025 prior to the beginning of the academic year. Independent researchers can begin their grants between July 2025 and March 2026.

Pre-Departure Orientation

All grantees are required to attend a pre-departure orientation in the summer of 2025 as a condition of their grants.

Candidate Profile

Applicants are required to indicate in their Statements of Grant Purpose how they expect their projects to enhance their understanding of Singapore or the bilateral relationship between Singapore and the United States. 

What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?

Fulbrighters in Singapore operate independently. A typical day might include meetings with their host advisor and other contacts, meals at a local hawker centre, and a trip to a local attraction. Public transportation is affordable and efficient. Fulbrighters may get invitations to embassy-initiated or alumni-initiated events occasionally.

The applicant must identify and secure an affiliation letter from a proposed host university based in Singapore and include it as part of the application. In particular, affiliation letters should detail the host institution’s commitment to securing the applicant’s appropriate Singaporean visa. Host universities also generally provide support by way of lab and library facilities. Affiliations will be confirmed by the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.

Fulbright student researchers typically enter Singapore using a Training Employment Pass or a Student’s Pass, both of which do not come with dependent visa privileges. Candidates are responsible for securing any necessary visas for their dependents and should be aware that it can be a challenging process. It is highly encouraged that candidates begin researching Singapore's visa policies as soon as possible to be fully aware of the eligibility requirements and restrictions associated with different visa categories.

Candidates will be responsible for making their own housing arrangements. Housing costs in Singapore are very high. If selected, candidates are strongly encouraged to research housing options prior to arrival.
