Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, will hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

The Getting Started page will provide information on eligibility and next steps.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

FPA

To support your students in applying for a U.S. Student Program award, please connect with the Fulbright Program Adviser at your institution.

Non U.S. Citizens

If you are a non-U.S. citizen interested in applying for a Fulbright Award to the United States, you will need to apply through the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy in your home country. Find out more information on the Fulbright Visiting Scholar or Student Program.

Cultural Adaptability and Awareness - Applicants must be culturally competent and amiable individuals who are able to adapt and thrive in a challenging environment. This requires a willingness to adjust both mentally and physically to the Malaysian cultural context and education system within rural placements while maintaining professionalism as a cultural ambassador.

\n

Academic and Professional Experience - Applicants from all majors are welcome.  Teaching experience is preferred, but not required.

\n

Transport - Due to the rural nature of many placements, applicants must be able and willing to drive during their grant period. A car may be provided as part of the grant, due to lack of public transportation in the assigned area.

\n

Health - All applicants should indicate in their applications if they have any medical conditions that could impair their abilities to teach English or to maintain a stable healthy lifestyle for the duration of the grant. This includes, but is not limited to, conditions that are worsened by heat or stress such as heart conditions, Epilepsy, Bipolar Diorder, Schizophrenia, and other severe or chronic mental and physical health issues. Some medications commonly prescribed in the U.S. are not available at the local market and require a waiver from the Ministry of Health in order to bring into the country for personal use. We advise that you check with the National Pharmacy Regulatory Agency (NPRA) (https://www.npra.gov.my/index.php/en/consumers/information/products-search). The Fulbright Commission of Malaysia is able to assist you with submitting an application of exemption for importation of prescriptions that are not recognized by the NPRA. Approval is by case by case basis and is at the discretion of the local government.

No formal research or independent study is allowed during the grant year. Grant awards for the English Teaching Assistantship program are designed to be active student-facing engagements and excluding yourself from the commitments of the program is prohibited and is grounds for termination of your grant. Possibly due to the lack of exposure beyond their communities, local attitudes toward gender, race, sexuality, and religion can be surprising and unsettling. Candidates should be prepared to negotiate these cultural differences in their communities with maturity and diplomacy.
