HOW TO GET STARTED

  • Contact FPA Judith (Judy) Zang, jzang@coastal.edu, to let her know you are interested in applying.
  • Arrange a meeting with Judy to discuss your interests and potential Fulbright plans.
  • Carefully consider the profiles of the different countries—you can only apply for ONE grant to ONE country.
  • Thoroughly read and become familiar with where to find information on the Fulbright website. There is a lot there (e.g., history, mission, eligibility, application components and instructions, tips and guidelines, webinar events, statistics, and alumni directory).
  • Consider potential letter of recommendation (LOR) writers (you need three) and discuss with the FPA.
  • Work with the Judy to establish a support team of staff and faculty experts.

APRIL TO JULY

  • ASAP, begin the online application (register as a Coastal Carolina University student, even if you are an alum!). You don’t want to miss Fulbright communications re: webinars and other events, announcements of new awards, etc.—you'll start getting notifications about events and announcements as soon as you create an account.
  • After discussing potential LOR writers with Judy Zang, get a commitment from them.
  • Sign up for the Fulbright webinars! Note that these are recorded, so if you cannot participate, you can listen to the recordings. These are very helpful as you prepare your application.
  • Schedule ahead to meet (in-person or remotely) with FPA Judy Zang a minimum of four times BEFORE AUGUST to discuss your plans, the application process, and review drafts of Fulbright answers. Ideally, have an initial discussion of your Fulbright plans with Judy in April and May.
  • Begin networking for affiliates (for research and study grant applicants only). Judy and your mentors can advise you in this endeavor. Be aware, it may be difficult to reach people abroad during the summer months, so begin reaching out for potential affiliates ASAP, ideally before the summer.
  • Secure your affiliation letter (if needed).
  • Send for all university/college transcripts, both in the United States and abroad.
  • Schedule your language evaluation (if needed).
  • Communicate with your support team to discuss your proposed project/study plans.

AUGUST

  • Send a recommendation letter packet to your letter writers by the first week of August: see https://www.coastal.edu/honorscollege/officeofnationalscholarships/lettersofrecommendationbuildingateam/
  • Continue to research your selected host country; keep up with current events in the country.
  • Continue to refine your Fulbright application answers; secure and upload transcripts (unofficial are fine) from all institutions of higher education that you attended as a college student, affiliation letter(s), and supplemental materials (if required).
