Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, hold a bachelor’s degree, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 5 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

If you are a U.S. citizen and a professor at a U.S. institution and are interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholar Award, you will need to apply through CIES.

Non U.S. Citizens

Award Profile

Pursuant to the Commission's commitment to binational understanding, the U.S.-Mexico Commission for Educational Exchange (COMEXUS), the Fulbright Commission in Mexico, will fund up to two grants specifically for students pursuing fieldwork, research or an internship in the area of Public Administration or Public Policy.

This award specifically seeks applicants interested in pursuing a career in Public Diplomacy or politics. Qualified applicants will have started or completed a Master's degree program or higher in a related field.

The Fulbright grant in Mexico is also known as Fulbright-García Robles.

Grant Period

9 Months

Grants lengths can range from 6 to 9 months. Grants start September 1, 2020 and end May 31, 2021. Some grants may begin January 1, 2021 but must end on or before June 30, 2021. Grants cannot be shorter than 6 months.

All grantees will be required to attend a Welcome Orientation in Mexico City at the end of August 2020 organized by COMEXUS. Attendance at the orientation is mandatory for all grantees, regardless of program start date.

Candidate Profile

Candidates should be currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD level program in a field related to Public Administration, Public Policy, Diplomacy or other related field. Candidates who have recently completed a terminal Master's degree will also be considered. Applications should reflect a true binational impact as well as the relevance to the candidate's professional or academic development.

Candidates who are not in a Master's program or higher will not be considered.

Additional Information: Spanish language proficiency is necessary, not only for the development of the proposed project, but also in order to communicate on a daily basis. Higher level proficiency may be necessary depending on the requirements of the proposed project. Applicants should discuss plans for language study between the time of application and the commencement of the grant on Language Self-Evaluation form. A Foreign Language Evaluation by a college level Spanish language instructor is also required.

Affiliation

Applicants MUST secure an affiliation with an accredited Mexican research institution or Mexican university. Secondary affiliations with NGOs are welcome as appropriate to the proposal, but are not accepted as a primary affiliation.

Those applicants who are selected as grantees and who do not have a firm confirmation from an appropriate Mexican host institution may be assisted by COMEXUS to identify and negotiate an affiliation with a Mexican institution or university.

Candidates who plan to conduct research for their Master's thesis or Doctoral dissertation should provide a letter of approval from their thesis adviser at their home institution.

Ineligibility

Applies to all grants: Candidates residing, working, or studying in Mexico in the year prior to beginning the grant are not eligible.

U.S.-Mexico dual citizens are eligible to apply.

Candidates who currently hold a temporary or permanent residency card to Mexico are not eligible to apply.

Applications in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Dentistry are NOT eligible.

Fulbright grantees must heed the U.S. State Department Travel Advisory to Mexico. Projects or affiliations located in areas where the advisory prohibits U.S. government personnel from traveling will NOT be considered.
