Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, hold a bachelor’s degree, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicants are encouraged to contact the Fulbright Program Adviser at their most recent alma mater to inquire if the institution can support alumni/ae through the application process. If not, non-enrolled applicants are welcome to apply at “at-large” candidates.

Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7-years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

Award Profile

The Fulbright/Turkish Universities Master's Program Award offers recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, developing professionals and artists an opportunity to pursue a full-time Master’s degree program at leading state and foundation universities in Turkey. Applications from all disciplines are eligible to apply.   

Participating universities to the award program are Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, Hacettepe University, İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, Ankara University, Middle East Technical University, Boğaziçi University, Koç University, Özyeğin University, and Sabancı University. Applications to other universities may also be accepted upon confirmation of the Turkish Fulbright Commission.

The Commission is committed to placing grantees in a variety of institutions. Therefore, we encourage candidates to apply to several of the participating universities, to increase their chances of receiving the award.  

All applications will be evaluated by a committee of scholars, both for their academic and professional excellence, as well as their potential to increase mutual understanding between the United States and Turkey. 

Following the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), all applications will be evaluated without prejudice toward individuals with disabilities.

A series of webinar sessions are organized by the Turkish Fulbright Commission prior to grantee arrival, covering various administrative and logistical topics. 

Grant Period

11 Months

Grants will begin in mid-September and run through the academic year.

An Orientation Meeting Program in Ankara is held for grantees in September, at the beginning of the academic year in Turkey. The Orientation Meeting consists of a variety of activities including lectures on Turkish history, culture, and recent political developments in the country, as well as cultural activities and visits to significant historical sites. 

A Mid-Year Evaluation Meeting is organized to evaluate the grantees' course performance and provide constructive feedback for the remainder of their grant period.

The Final Evaluation Meeting is held towards the end of the academic year to allow grantees to share their academic and cultural experiences in Turkey and to evaluate their overall Fulbright experience. 

All the meetings are held jointly with U.S. Scholar Program and U.S. Student Program Grantees, providing a supportive and collaborative environment in which grantees with a variety of backgrounds and experiences can learn from one another. The costs of attending these mandatory meetings are covered by the Turkish Fulbright Commission.

Candidate Profile

Candidates with dual U.S.-Turkish citizenship are eligible to apply. However, dual citizens are not eligible if either of the following applies: (1) The candidate received a degree from a university in Turkey; (2) The candidate resided in Turkey for more than a consecutive year within the past five years.

The program is open to recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, developing professionals and artists from all disciplines.

The medium of instruction at Boğazıçi University, Hacettepe University, Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, Koç University, Özyeğin University, Middle East Technical University, and Sabancı University is English. However, if a candidate receives an acceptance from a university with Turkish medium of instruction, proficiency in Turkish language is required.  

Turkish Language courses will also be arranged by the host universities to improve candidates’ Turkish language abilities.

Affiliation

Applicants are responsible for arranging their own affiliation and must apply for admission according to the relevant university’s admissions procedures. Applicants are not expected to have a letter of admission/affiliation at time of application, but awards are made conditional upon acceptance by the chosen institution before arrival.

Applicants will complete two applications, the Fulbright application and the university’s application (according to the university’s admissions procedures). Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their university applications as early as possible. The Fulbright Program does not cover the application fees for the universities. Candidates are welcome to contact the Turkish Fulbright Commission for assistance in arranging host institution affiliations. 

Candidates who wish to apply for the grant may directly contact the universities stated in the program announcement or, with prior approval of the Turkish Fulbright Commission, other universities, and upon receiving admission to a master's program apply to the Fulbright Program with their admission letters.

Candidates without a formal acceptance letter from the university will be asked to provide the Turkish Fulbright Commission with a letter of acceptance upon receiving the award.

Affiliation Fees/Tuition

Funding including round-trip ticket, monthly stipend, health insurance, settling-in allowance and academic field work support will be provided by the Turkish Fulbright Commission for the first year of study; and tuition waiver/support, student lodging and Turkish language education will be provided by the participating universities.

Fulbright funding under this award is for one academic year.  If a candidate is accepted to a two-year Master’s program, the host university can offer funding for the second year depending on the candidate’s academic performance.

Candidates may be contacted for Skype interviews by the Turkish Fulbright Commission.

Dependents Information

Candidates may bring their dependents, but the Program cannot provide them with any financial or logistical support (visa application, residency permit application, etc.). 

Visa Requirements

Candidates applying to pursue graduate studies must obtain a Student Visa (Öğrenci Vizesi). The visa should be obtained from a Turkish Embassy/Consulate in the United States.

The grantee is responsible for acquiring the proper visa for his/her grant. The Turkish Fulbright Commission requests the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to inform the relevant Turkish Embassy/Consulates in the United States of the Fulbright/Turkish Universities Master's Program Award recipients’ names to ease their visa application process. 

Grantees are required to pay their own student visa application fees. Residency permit application fees will be covered by the Turkish Fulbright Commission. In addition, costs associated with acquiring any official documentation required for the residency permit application, including a valid health insurance in Turkey, are also covered by the Turkish Fulbright Commission.
