Founded in 1884, Bangor University has a tradition of academic excellence and a strong focus on student experience. Around 11,000 students currently study at the University, with 650 teaching staff based within fourteen Academic Schools.

Bangor University is ranked in the top 40 in the UK for research, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. The REF recognised that more than three-quarters of Bangor’s research is either world-leading or internationally excellent, ahead of the average for UK universities.

The University is located in the vibrant college town of Bangor in North West Wales. The location – close to the mountains of Snowdonia and the sea – has been described as the best university setting in the UK. In 2016 north Wales was named as the 4th best region in the world to visit by the travel guide Lonely Planet due to its stunning location, world heritage site castles and reputation as the adventure sport capital of the UK.

Grant amount

  • Full tuition waiver for the first year of study
  • £13,450 living stipend

The living stipend is intended as a contribution towards general maintenance costs towards the first year in the UK.

Grant Period

10 Months

Academic programs may last 9-12 months, depending on the length of the academic year.

All grantees to the UK attend a 3-day orientation program on arrival in September, a 4-day Fulbright Forum in January and a farewell event, the Fulbright ‘End-cap’ weekend in June/July.

Candidate Profile

The Commission is seeking applicants who demonstrate:

  • Rigor in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence;
  • Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK and at a particular institution;
  • A desire to gain a better understanding of the peoples and cultures of their host country;
  • Commitment to the community through volunteer and extra-curricular activities;
  • Flexibility and dynamism necessary for active involvement in the host country.

Affiliation

Applicants are responsible for arranging their own affiliation and must apply for admission according to the relevant university’s admissions procedures. Applicants are not expected to have a letter of admission/affiliation at time of application, but awards are made conditional upon acceptance by the chosen institution before arrival.

Applicants will complete two applications, the Fulbright application and the university’s application (according to the university’s admissions procedures). Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their university applications as early as possible, ideally before January 15, 2020. The Fulbright Program does not cover the application fee for the university.

Affiliation Fees/Tuition

Grantees awarded a Fulbright UK Partnership award will pay no tuition fees.

Ineligibility

The following applicants are ineligible for consideration: applicants who are currently resident in or who have extensive previous experience in the UK, applicants whose proposals are to complete any part of a medical degree, including internships or residencies, or applicants who hold a Ph.D. at the time the grant is to begin.
