One award is offered to pursue a one or two year Masters, or three year PhD in Art & Design at University of Northumbria.

From creating fine art to conserving it; from animation to film, theatre and television, through to arts management and teaching, the Northumbria Arts Department is a dynamic and stimulating environment to study a wide range of courses.

The Northumbria School of Design covers a range of masters courses in Communication, Innovation, and Design Management.

With alumni including Apple’s Sir Jonathan Ive, principal designer of the iPad, iPhone and iMac, the Northumbria design community examines design in the context of use, beauty and social and cultural contexts.

Grant amount

• Full tuition waiver

• £13,450 living stipend

The living stipend is intended as a contribution towards general maintenance costs during the degree programme in the UK.

Grant Period

10 Months

Academic programs may last 9 – 12 months, depending on the length of the academic year. Applicants for two or three year programs will receive the full grant during the period of study, but will only be considered Fulbright recipients during the first year of study.

All grantees to the UK attend a 3-day orientation program on arrival in September, a 4-day Fulbright Forum in January, and a farewell event, the Fulbright ‘End-cap’ weekend in June/July.

Candidate Profile

The Commission is seeking applicants who demonstrate:

  • Rigor in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence;
  • Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK and at a particular institution;
  • A desire to gain a better understanding of the peoples and cultures of their host country;
  • Commitment to the community through volunteer and extra-curricular activities;
  • Flexibility and dynamism necessary for active involvement in the host country.

Applicants are responsible for arranging their own affiliation and must apply for admission according to the relevant university’s admissions procedures. Applicants are not expected to have a letter of admission/affiliation at time of application, but awards are made conditional upon acceptance by the chosen institution before arrival. Applicants for Ph.D. programs should include a letter from a potential supervisor in their application.

Applicants will complete two applications, the Fulbright application and the university’s application (according to the university’s admissions procedures). Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their university applications as early as possible, ideally before January 15, 2020. The Fulbright Program does not cover the application fee for the university.

Affiliation Fees/Tuition

Grantees awarded a Fulbright UK Partnership award will pay no tuition fees.


The following applicants are ineligible for consideration: applicants who are currently resident in or who have extensive previous experience in the UK; who hold a Ph.D. at the time the grant is to begin; and applicants whose proposals are to complete any part of a medical degree, including internships or residencies.

Applicants must propose a Master's or Ph.D. degree in Art and Design to be eligible for this award.
