Candidate Profile

Applicants must have strong motivation and excellent study results. Candidates must be admitted (at the time of application or later during the selection process for the Fulbright grant) to an English taught Master's degree programs at VU Amsterdam. Additional Information: Dutch language proficiency is not required, but is useful at the time of arrival. Some study of Dutch prior to arrival is encouraged in order to promote deeper engagement with the host community.The grants are available only for Master's programs taught in English.

Affiliation

Applicants are required to apply to VU Amsterdam independent of their Fulbright application and, if already admitted, to include a letter of admission with their application. If this is not yet possible, this can be provided at a later date. 

Although the deadline for applying at the VU Amsterdam is April 1, 2019, applicants who want to be considered for the Fulbright/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam grants are asked to apply and complete their application at VU Amsterdam before January 15, 2019 at the latest. The application process opens on October 1, 2018.

Affiliation Fees/Tuition

Tuition fees are not waived, and differ per program, see http://www.vu.nl/tuitionfee. The Fulbright/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Award cannot be combined with the Holland Scholarship.

Ineligibility

U.S. students currently residing in the Netherlands will not be considered for any awards to the Netherlands.

In addition, U.S. students with both U.S. and Dutch citizenship will not be considered. 

This grant is also not available for US students with another EU nationality who intend to study at the VU on the basis of their EU nationality, or a spousal EU visa.

Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply.  All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses.  Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student you would be eligible to apply in your senior year.  If you are a graduate student you are eligible to apply to most countries as long as you will not have a PhD degree on the application deadline.

Non-U.S. Student

If you are a non-U.S. citizen looking to applying for a Fulbright grant to study in the United States you will apply to the Fulbright Program for Foreign Students in your home country.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, hold a bachelor’s degree, and do not have a PhD degree then you could be eligible for certain awards within the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.  Please review the program summary for the country where you would like to apply.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts.  Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 5 years or less) in which they are applying.  Artists with more experience should consider applying for Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

If you are a U.S. citizen and a professor at a U.S. institution and are interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholar Award you will need to apply through CIES.

Non U.S. Professor
