Award Profile

One award is offered to pursue a one-year Master’s degree (or the first year of a longer Master’s or Ph.D. program) in any discipline at the University of York.

Founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, the University of York opened in 1963 with just 230 students. Since then York has become one of the world’s leading universities. Ranked as one of the top 100 universities in the world for international outlook in the 2018 Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, the University of York has carved out a reputation as an academic powerhouse with national and international recognition alongside longer established institutions.

A member of the elite Russell Group of universities, York is a dynamic, research-intensive university committed to the development of life-saving discoveries and new technologies to tackle some of the most pressing global challenges. There are now over 30 academic departments and research centres and the student body has expanded to over 17,000. Around 100 American Students join us each fall. Research excellence defines York and further strengthening and improving its research, to be dynamic, inspirational and life‑changing in its impact, is an absolute priority. The University ranked 10th for the impact and influence of research and 14th overall in the UK Government assessment of the quality of research in the Research Excellence Framework 2014.

Situated walking-distance from the historic city of York, the university enjoys a beautiful location in one of Europe’s finest cities. Described as offering a perfect mix of heritage and innovation, York was named as the Sunday Times Newspaper’s ‘Best Place to Live in the UK 2018.’

York has a population of around 200,000 people and can boast excellent road and rail connections. Trains reach London in less than two hours and Edinburgh in around two and a half. Local regional airports offer services to many major American hubs.

Throughout your time at York, you will become a member of one of nine colleges and be guaranteed single dorm accommodation on or close to campus. This means you will never be far from your department and a range of study and social spaces.
