One award is offered to pursue a one-year Master’s degree (or the first year of a longer Master’s) in any discipline at the University of Sussex.

The University of Sussex was the first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s. Sussex has become a leading teaching and research institution.

Sussex is a research intensive university, considered to be among the leading 20 research universities in the UK. Sussex is ranked number one in the world for Development Studies (QS World Rankings 2015, 2017, 2018) and it is in the top 60 in the world for Business and Economics, Media and Communications, International Relations, Geography and Politics (THE World Rankings 2019). 

Sussex emphasises interdisciplinary teaching and research and has particular strengths in:

• Humanities (American Studies, English Literature, History)

• Social Sciences & Cultural Studies (Development Studies, Business and Management Studies, Education, International Relations, Law, Media Studies)

• Life Sciences (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Psychology)

• Science & Technology (Computing Sciences, Engineering & Information Technology, Science & Technology Policy)

Grant amount

• Full tuition waiver for the first year of study

• £13,450 living stipend

The living stipend is intended as a contribution towards general maintenance costs towards the first year in the UK.

Grant Period

10 Months

Academic programs may last 9 – 12 months, depending on the length of the academic year.

All grantees to the UK attend a 3-day orientation program on arrival in September, a 4-day Fulbright Forum in January and a farewell event, the Fulbright ‘End-cap’ weekend in June/July.

Candidate Profile

The Commission is seeking applicants who demonstrate:

  • Rigor in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence;
  • Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK and at a particular institution;
  • A desire to gain a better understanding of the peoples and cultures of their host country;
  • Commitment to the community through volunteer and extra-curricular activities;
  • Flexibility and dynamism necessary for active involvement in the host country.

Affiliation

Applicants are responsible for arranging their own affiliation and must apply for admission according to the relevant university’s admissions procedures. Applicants are not expected to have a letter of admission/affiliation at time of application, but awards are made conditional upon acceptance by the chosen institution before arrival.

Applicants will complete two applications, the Fulbright application and the university’s application (according to the university’s admissions procedures). Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their university applications as early as possible, ideally before January 15, 2020. The Fulbright Program does not cover the application fee for the university.

Affiliation Fees/Tuition

Grantees awarded a Fulbright UK Partnership award will pay no tuition fees.

Ineligibility

The following applicants are ineligible for consideration: applicants who are currently resident in or who have extensive previous experience in the UK, applicants whose proposals are to complete any part of a medical degree, including internships or residencies, or applicants who hold a Ph.D. at the time the grant is to begin.
