Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, hold a bachelor’s degree, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicants are encouraged to contact the Fulbright Program Adviser at their most recent alma mater to inquire if the institution can support alumni/ae through the application process. If not, non-enrolled applicants are welcome to apply at “at-large” candidates.

Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7-years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

Award Profile

Up to 3 Fulbright Awards are offered for postgraduate study at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Awards will be made across the university’s faculties: Faculty of Engineering (1 award tenable for a one-year masters program, or the first year of a Ph.D., or a three-year Ph.D.); Strathclyde Business School (a one-year master’s degree programme or a 3-year PhD); and, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences (1 award tenable for a one-year masters program or a three-year Ph.D.)

The University of Strathclyde was established more than 200 years ago and has a vibrant, international community with students from more than 100 countries.

The University has recently been announced as Times Higher Education University of the Year 2019. We are the only university to be awarded the UK-wide award for a second time. Facilities

Following a £1 billion campus investment, a brand new £31 million Strathclyde Sport centre has opened. The sport centre provides a range of health and wellbeing facilities for students, staff and the local community. The Centre offers state-of-the art training facilities, including a 25-metre swimming pool, fitness suite with capacity for over 180 people, sports halls, squash courts, dance studio and treatment rooms.

Strathclyde Business School

Strathclyde Business School is one of the few institutions in the world to have achieved triple accreditation from AACSB, AMBA and EQUIA (as of March 2019, 90 business schools have this status – source: MBA Today) and the first business school in Scotland to be awarded the Small Business Charter Award.

Science

With a vibrant, internationally leading community, the Faculty of Science is proud to have five disciplines ranked top 10 in the UK by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020.

Humanities and Social Sciences

The faculty offers a wide range of courses that are recognised professionally and accredited by the appropriate statutory bodies. The faculty has strong links with government, global organisations, in both the public and private sector, and academic networks.

Engineering

Strathclyde is home to Scotland’s largest Engineering Faculty and our impressive multimillion-pound investments in engineering facilities gives students access to state-of-the-art equipment and work space in which to study.

Grant Period

10 Months

Masters programs in the UK may last up to one year (and in rare circumstances, 2 years). Unless otherwise stated, funding is provided for the first year of the degree - although the grant period is 10 months, tuition waivers cover the entire first year and student visas are not impacted by grant length. 

Grants for eligible PhDs will provide funding for the course of the PhD, but grantees will not be eligible for specific Fulbright benefits (events, ASPE, etc) following the first year.

  • Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK and at a particular institution;
  • A desire to gain a better understanding of the peoples and cultures of their host country;
  • Commitment to the community through volunteer and extra-curricular activities;
  • Flexibility and dynamism necessary for active involvement in the host country.

Affiliation

Applicants are responsible for arrand include a letter of support from their proposed supervisor.ging their own affiliation and must apply for admission according to the relevant university’s admissions procedures. Applicants are not expected to have a letter of admission/affiliation at time of application, but awards are made conditional upon acceptance by the chosen institution before arrival. Applicants for Ph.D. programs should include a letter of support from their proposed supervisor.

Applicants will complete two applications, the Fulbright application and the university’s application (according to the university’s admissions procedures). Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their university applications as early as possible, ideally before January 15, 2021. Applicants who fail to do so may be at a competitive disadvantage. The Fulbright Program does not cover the application fee for the university.

Affiliation Fees/Tuition

Grantees awarded a Fulbright UK Partnership award will pay no tuition fees.

Ineligibility

The following applicants are ineligible for consideration: applicants who are currently resident in or who have extensive previous experience in the UK; who hold a Ph.D. at the time the grant is to begin; and applicants whose proposals are to complete any part of a medical degree, including internships or residencies.

Applicants who have previously spent time at their selected university will be at a competitive disadvantage.

Applicants for PhD Programs in the UK are generally expected to have a Master's degree - please check your eligibility with your intended department if you do not have a Master's degree or Master's level experience.

Grant Amount

The Fulbright University of Strathclyde Award covers the following:

  • 1-year Master’s degree programme or a PhD for a period of 3 years (1 award) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • 1-year Master’s degree programme, the first year of a PhD, or a PhD for a period of 3 years (1 award) within the Faculty of Engineering
  • 1-year Master’s degree programme or a 3-year PhD (1 award) within Strathclyde Business School

- Full tuition fee waiver

- £14,000 living stipend

The living stipend is intended as a contribution towards general maintenance costs towards the first year in the UK.

Interviews

Based on university partner feedback, select semi-finalist applicants will be interviewed mid-February to early March. Interviews will take place via video conferencing.
