United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, hold a bachelor’s degree, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 5 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

Five Fulbright Awards are offered for postgraduate study at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Awards will be made in each of the university’s four schools: Faculty of Science (1 award tenable for a 3-year Ph.D.); Faculty of Engineering (1 award tenable for a one-year masters program, or the first year of a Ph.D., or a three-year Ph.D.); Strathclyde Business School (1 award tenable for a 3-year Ph.D.); and, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences (2 awards tenable for a one-year masters program, or the first year of a Ph.D., or a three-year Ph.D.)

The University of Strathclyde is a leading technological institution situated in the heart of Glasgow city centre, one of the UK’s largest and most dynamic cities.

Glasgow has been named the ‘friendliest city in the world’ in a Rough Guides poll and named a must visit destination by leading publications like the New York Times, The Guardian and Wanderlust! Glasgow is a European City of Culture and Architecture and UNESCO City of Music.

The University of Strathclyde is home to the triple-accredited Strathclyde Business School, voted UK Business School of the Year 2016 by Times Higher Education

Strathclyde also boasts one of the largest Engineering Faculties in the UK, is one of the largest providers of teacher education in Scotland, with many departments ranked within the Top 20 in the UK, and its Faculty of Sciences continues to be at the forefront for research and training.

Grant amounts

The Fulbright University of Strathclyde Award covers the following:

- 1-year Master’s degree programme or the 1st year of a PhD programme in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering

- 3-year PhD programmes in the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Strathclyde Business School and Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences

- full tuition fee waiver

- £13,450 living stipend

The living stipend is intended as a contribution towards general maintenance costs towards the first year in the UK.

Grant Period

10 Months

Fulbright grants last from September to June, but the academic programs may last longer. Funding may continue to be provided outside of the grant period for awards lasting longer than one year.

All grantees to the UK attend a 3-day orientation program on arrival in September, a 4-day Fulbright Forum in January and a farewell event, the Fulbright ‘End-cap’ weekend in June/July.

The Commission is seeking applicants who demonstrate:

  • Rigor in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence;
  • Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK and at a particular institution;
  • A desire to gain a better understanding of the peoples and cultures of their host country;
  • Commitment to the community through volunteer and extra-curricular activities;
  • Flexibility and dynamism necessary for active involvement in the host country.

Affiliation

Applicants are responsible for arranging their own affiliation and must apply for admission according to the relevant university’s admissions procedures. Applicants are not expected to have a letter of admission/affiliation at time of application, but awards are made conditional upon acceptance by the chosen institution before arrival. Applicants for Ph.D. programs should include a letter of support from their proposed supervisor.

Applicants will complete two applications, the Fulbright application and the university’s application (according to the university’s admissions procedures). Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their university applications as early as possible, ideally before January 15, 2020. The Fulbright Program does not cover the application fee for the university.

Affiliation Fees/Tuition

Grantees awarded a Fulbright UK Partnership award will pay no tuition fees.

Ineligibility

The following applicants are ineligible for consideration: applicants who are currently resident in or who have extensive previous experience in the UK, applicants whose proposals are to complete any part of a medical degree, including internships or residencies, or applicants who hold a Ph.D. at the time the grant is to begin.
