Award Profile

Up to two awards are offered to pursue an International Master’s Degree Program at the University of Helsinki. In the absence of suitable candidates, Master's-level non-degree students can also be considered. The programs, information, and application instructions are listed at the University of Helsinki website.

Grant Period

9 Months

Grants will begin in early September. In exceptional circumstances, the Fulbright Commission may consider beginning the grant period later in the year. If this is your preference, please indicate it explicitly in your application.

The grantee will be eligible, free of charge, to participate in a Fulbright Finland Foundation pre-approved summer school in Finland consisting of courses on Finnish language, culture and society, pending availability of suitable programs.

There is a mandatory in-country orientation at the end of August.

Additional Information: Finnish or Swedish language proficiency is not required unless it is needed to successfully complete the project/ study plan. Applicants do not necessarily need Finnish or Swedish in order to be able to study in Finland. In addition to the Fulbright award, the grantee is eligible to participate in an introductory course on Finnish language, culture and society organized by the University of Helsinki or University of Turku Summer School or another university pre-approved by the Fulbright Commission.

Affiliation

The applicant should apply for admission to the University of Helsinki's Master's degree program directly.

Applicants are reminded that they must apply independently for admission to the university, and comply with their application deadlines. University admission guidelines can be found at the university websites or by contacting the International Coordinator at the school or department to which you wish to apply.

Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply.  All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses.  Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student you would be eligible to apply in your senior year.  If you are a graduate student you are eligible to apply to most countries as long as you will not have a PhD degree on the application deadline.

Non-U.S. Student

If you are a non-U.S. citizen looking to applying for a Fulbright grant to study in the United States you will apply to the Fulbright Program for Foreign Students in your home country.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, hold a bachelor’s degree, and do not have a PhD degree then you could be eligible for certain awards within the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.  Please review the program summary for the country where you would like to apply.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts.  Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 5 years or less) in which they are applying.  Artists with more experience should consider applying for Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

If you are a U.S. citizen and a professor at a U.S. institution and are interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholar Award you will need to apply through CIES.

Non U.S. Professor
