Current U.S. Student

United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Award Profile

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program places Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the United States.

Prior teaching experience is not required but helpful.  It’s important to note that ETAs are not full‐fledged professors, the program is a professional development opportunity for them to advance their teaching skills and have a positive experience in the host country.  There will be additional responsibilities of teaching in the U.S. Embassy American Center and the U.S. funded English Access Microscholarship Program.

Grant Period
Fall Start

All grantees are required to begin their 10 month grants in early October 2022 in order to attend the in-country orientation program. English Teaching Assistants will be placed at their host institutions from October 2022 through August 2023 to meet the Cambodian school year requirements.

Orientation
Pre-Departure and In-Country Orientation

ETAs are required to fully participate in the Pre-Departure Orientation organized by ECA and IIE in the summer as well as an in-person orientation upon arrival.

Candidate Profile

Self-motivation, flexibility, creativity and autonomy are keys to a successful project. While ETAs are supported by the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, they are expected to problem-solve and operate independently to the extent that they can. ETAs are also expected to be cultural ambassadors and promote mutual understanding between people of the United States and Cambodia. ETAs must be willing to learn and respect new cultures and are expected to demonstrate high levels of professionalism.
