Eric R. Gulson C.

During his Fulbright grant to Indonesia, Eric led a project designed to restore nesting sites for two species of hornbill birds that occupy a key niche in local ecology. These birds nest exclusively in large natural tree hollows, which can only be found in proportionately large trees. With extensive coordination amongst villagers, guides, tree/cave climbers, conservation officers, and other local collaborators, Eric's project focused on hollowing out salvaged tree segments, gluing them back together, and placing them high on trees to increase the availability of nest sites in those areas. This project resulted from a collaboration with the bird conservation NGO Burung Indonesia and the Research Center for Climate Change at Universitas Indonesia. Eric is now a Ph.D. student in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan.
