CLAYTON D. BROWN

Fulbright U.S. Student Fellow 2004-2005

Country Visited: Taiwan

Applied Through: University of Pittsburgh, Undergraduate

Field of Study: East Asian/Pacific/Australian History

Proposal Summary:
Defining the majority: Han identity in Chinese ethnology and archaeology

Education

Utah State University
M.A., 2001

Additional Information

Under the auspices of the University of Pittsburgh, he is searching archives and reports, and interviewing scholars, to understand how anthropology contributed to building the Chinese nation. He visits museums, temples, and scenic areas throughout Taiwan, and plans travel to Hong Kong and Macao as well. Clayton has found that, since his Taiwan tenure a decade ago, Taiwanese identity independent of the mainland has matured; as a result, Taiwanese think he has come to the wrong place to study "Chinese" history.

Following the completion of his research, Clayton plans to teach Asian history at a university.
