10 FULBRIGHT GRANTS
Grant period 10 months. Grantees arrive in New Zealand in late January/early February 2011 and must participate in the orientation program offered by the Fulbright Commission in New Zealand prior to the beginning of the academic year. This orientation provides an introduction to New Zealand society, culture, politics, and history, as well as offering useful information on the academic environment and the Fulbright program. Grantees must also participate fully in the June report-back event, the end-of-year Thanksgiving event, and provide to the Fulbright Commission copies of any articles, research papers, or theses completed while in New Zealand.
Candidate profile Fulbright New Zealand does not fund post-doctoral awards. Applicants currently pursuing U.S. doctoral degrees must indicate in their applications how their intended research in New Zealand will contribute to their doctoral program. Applicants may wish to either: a) enroll in a graduate degree program at a New Zealand university; b) carry out a program of research towards a U.S. graduate degree; or c) carry out an independent research/study project while being affiliated with a New Zealand tertiary institution.
Factors affecting eligibility U.S. applicants currently residing in New Zealand and applicants with dual U.S.-New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency are not eligible. Applicants with completed doctorates at the time of the award beginning are also ineligible.
Affiliation All applicants must be affiliated with an accredited higher education or research institution in New Zealand. Applicants are expected to find their own affiliation; however, the Fulbright Commission in New Zealand can assist grantees in finding the institution that best suits their needs and academic interests.
Tuition Tuition fees for grantees enrolling at New Zealand universities are paid by Fulbright New Zealand during the period of the grant. A fortnightly stipend is paid to grantees during the grant period. The amount of the stipend depends on the city where the grantee is based.
Specific program/country considerations Applicants considering Maori/indigenous/cultural-specific projects should investigate norms/practices to ensure the feasibility of the project. They can do this by searching relevant websites and contacting relevant faculty or experts in the proposed area.
Research clearance Grantees must apply for research clearance in some cases. The application process can take a significant period of time, so grantees should discuss this issue with their project supervisor in advance of their arrival in New Zealand and begin the application process as early as possible.
Special opportunities 1) Some New Zealand universities offer U.S. Fulbright students the opportunity to apply for scholarships that will enable them to continue full-time studies in New Zealand beyond the one academic year Fulbright award. These scholarships are available to Fulbright students either enrolling in the second year of a two-year Master’s degree, or enrolling in a New Zealand Doctoral program, or enrolling in a one-year Master’s degree designed to follow a Post-Graduate Diploma or Honours program. Applicants interested in this option should indicate this in their Fulbright application and check for details on the Fulbright New Zealand website. 2) The New Zealand government also offers New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships, awarded on the basis of academic merit, which provide financial support for students from designated countries undertaking doctoral degrees through research at New Zealand universities. Also, international students enrolling in a doctoral program pay the same fees as New Zealand domestic students, and any dependent children of international doctoral students have domestic student status in New Zealand schools. More information is available at www.newzealandeducated.com. Dependents No dependent allowance is available.
