There are five types of Fulbright grants to Italy. 20 FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS Language Proficient spoken and written Italian commensurate with the project is required at the time of application. Language study begun after applying is considered insufficient. The Fulbright Commission will make no provision for Italian language instruction.
Grant duration 9 months, October 10, 2010 to July 10, 2011. Fulbright grantees will be required to participate in a one-to-two day orientation program organized by the Fulbright Commission in mid-October.
Candidate profile Candidates at all degree levels and in all fields of study are considered. Candidates whose projects are concerned with contemporary topics, science and technology and entrepreneurship are particularly encouraged.
Affiliation Candidates are not required to enroll in an Italian university. It is the applicant’s responsibility to establish contacts with potential host institutions in Italy and to secure affiliation with an Italian university or a research center; evidence of this affiliation must be submitted with the application. Applicants who are interested in enrolling in an Italian university must follow the enrollment procedure through the Italian diplomatic missions in the United States. Music and arts Candidates are encouraged to establish contacts with Italian specialists in their fields before applying for a grant and to solicit letters of invitation to study under them. Affiliations with art or music institutions (conservatories of music, art academies or private institutes) will be preferred. The Commission does not accept music and art students who wish to study exclusively with private teachers. In no case will the Fulbright Commission make financial provisions to pay for private lessons. Additional personal funds will be required to cover costs for private lessons, practicing facilities, studio space, purchase of materials, etc.

There are 2 Schools of Architecture, 4 Schools of Engineering and a Graduate School offering thirty Ph.D. programs (http://www.polito.it/ateneo/facolta/index.en.html).
Language Grantees will attend courses taught in English; the possibility of attending courses taught in Italian can be considered. In this case, proficient spoken and written Italian is required at the time of application. Language study begun after applying is considered insufficient.
Candidate profile Candidates at all degree levels are considered. Graduates and university students in Engineering and Architectural fields who wish to conduct thesis research and/or enroll in courses within degree programs offered in English language at the Polytechnic of Turin and doctoral students who wish to conduct research for their dissertation in any one of the departments of the Polytechnic will be considered.
Application Candidates who wish to conduct research are requested not to submit a letter of invitation from the Polytechnic of Turin. Grant benefits The grant, funded by the Polytechnic of Turin with a contribution from the Italian Fulbright Commission, will include a financial contribution for nine months, a travel allowance towards the purchase of an international round-trip plane ticket, accommodation at one of the Polytechnic dormitories as well as passes for public transportation and public museums.

2 FULBRIGHT GRANTS IN DEAFNESS These scholarships allow graduate students to conduct research, to teach, and/or collaborate on new projects in deafness-related fields in Italy.
Language Some knowledge of at least one romance language is required; some knowledge of the Italian language is preferred but is not essential. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required.
Grant duration 4 months (usually second semester, especially for those projects that directly involve schools).
Candidate profile Deaf and hearing graduate students in deafness-related areas, with at least some experience in the area of the proposed project.

General comments Proposals should involve research, teaching, and/or collaboration on projects aimed, either directly or indirectly, at improving education for deaf and/or deaf-blind children. Examples include bilingual education; co-enrollment methods; art education; interpreter education; theatre education; teaching sign language as a language to deaf and/or hearing children; curriculum development for and/or teaching of ASL as a foreign language to deaf students; teaching English through ASL; developing tools that will contribute to creating a positive environment where deaf and/or deaf-blind students can enjoy free and total access to curriculum and information. 1 MIGUEL VINCIGUERRA FUND GRANT/FULBRIGHT TRAVEL GRANT Cadidiate profile Open to candidates at all degree levels in the creative and performing arts only.

3 FULBRIGHT TEACHING ASSSISTANTSHIPS TO ITALY Up to 5 awards to be offered. The Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Program aims to strengthen English language instruction at Italian educational institutions by establishing a native-speaker presence to provide part-time assistance for between 12 and 16 teaching hours per week to permanent teaching staff. At the same time, U.S. participants will gain from intensive cross-cultural interaction and international educational and/or research opportunities at Italian institutions.
Language A good knowledge of Italian is strongly recommended; basic facility in Italian is required. Successful candidates must be articulate native English speakers.
Grant duration/period 9 months. Mid-September to the end of May. (Grant dates must correspond to the school year in Italy.) Fulbright English Teaching Assistants will be required to participate in a one-to-two day orientation program organized by the Fulbright Commission in mid-September.
Candidate profile Master’s level candidates with the initiative, maturity, and self reliance needed to assist in teaching English language and American studies to Italian students in high schools or elementary schools are encouraged to apply. Applications from students at all degree levels will be accepted, but strong preference will be given to applicants already possessing a BA degree at the time of application. Additionally, applicants with teaching background are encouraged to apply.
Affiliation The Commission will match the grantee with the appropriate educational institution. Details of assignments will be subject to communication between the Fulbright Commission and the school and based on the academic profile of the selected candidate, the school’s needs, and the grantee’s research or study requirements.
General comments Applicants should submit detailed descriptions of their study or career interests and also include well-thought-out and feasible project proposals. In addition to their English Teaching Assistant activities, grantees may enroll in academic courses each semester, if the regional assignment permits such activity, or engage in independent research related to their fields of study. These activities, combined with the Teaching Assistant responsibilities, will comprise a full-time program. Each host institution will tailor the assistantship to its language teaching needs and the grantee’s background, academic interests, and abilities. Teaching assistant activities may include: serving as resource persons in conversation groups; providing small group tutorials; serving as attendants in language laboratories; giving talks related to American studies in English classes or civic/school organizations. English Teaching assistantships may include home-stays with Italian families. 1 FULBRIGHT/CASTEN FAMILY FOUNDATION AWARD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GASTRONOMIC SCIENCES This award is intended for candidates with a special interest in the Slow Food movement and awareness of food culture and food sector issues. This full award will allow the grantee to attend the Master in Food Culture and Communications at the University of Gastronomic Sciences Colorno campus.
Language Proficient knowledge of the Italian language is required.
Grant period The course will last one year beginning March 2011.
Candidate profile Candidates should possess a university degree (bachelor’s or master’s).
Affiliation The grantee will be enrolled in the University of Gastronomic Sciences, Master in Food Culture and Communications. The main goal of this English-language Master’s is to provide students with knowledge about quality food products, as well as the communication and promotion of such products based on a thorough anthropological and historical study of food consumption, not only in Italy, but also the rest of Europe. The course combines theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom with practical skills acquired during work experience and field trips. The Master’s includes a full program of stages (field seminars) during which students will discover the best foods and wines of a number of Italian regions and European countries.
Application Applicants are required to submit the standard Fulbright application. The study project must be consistent with the University of Gastronomic Sciences’ mission and program. Grant benefits The grant will cover costs in connection with participation in the Master’s program: tuition, lodging in the university dorms, lunches, all planned stages, room, board and transportation associated with stages, required didactic material and participation in all events organized by the University of Gastronomic Sciences and Slow Food.
