10 FULBRIGHT FUll GRANTS

There are 4 types of Fulbright grants available: Fulbright Full grants funded by the Fulbright Commission in Finland; Fulbright-CIMO grants funded in cooperation with the Center for International Mobility (CIMO) of the Finnish Ministry of Education; the Fulbright-University of Turku Graduate Award; and a grant co-sponsored by the University of Helsinki. The Fulbright Commission in Finland strongly encourages potential applicants to visit its website for more information and to contact it directly with any questions.

Language
Language skills should be commensurate with the requirements of the project. An international student or researcher does not necessarily need Finnish or Swedish in order to be able to study in Finland. Many universities offer programs in English and the language is widely spoken in academic circles and in the country as a whole. Candidates should consult the academic department as to the availability of courses and the possibility to conduct research in English.

Academic year
Usually September through May. Please consult the department for details on the term structure and teaching periods.

Grant period
9 months. The grant period begins from the fall semester unless otherwise agreed with the Finnish Fulbright Commission. The Fulbright Commission organizes a mandatory arrival orientation usually at the end of August. Please check dates for your university orientation.

Candidate profile
Candidates at all degree levels will be considered. Current Ph.D. candidates or students seeking to complete degree programs in Finland may be given preference.

Factors affecting eligibility
Candidates currently residing in Finland are not eligible for consideration.

Affiliation
Candidates are responsible for securing affiliation with a Finnish institution of higher education, research institution, or other acceptable organization. Candidates must have an academic adviser for their study or independent research project. Established contact with a Finnish institution is strongly recommended by the Fulbright application deadline. In any case, candidates must submit sufficient evidence of affiliation by early January in order to be considered by the Fulbright Commission. Finnish universities have a wide selection of special Master’s programs taught in English.

Specific country considerations
Finnish universities do not currently charge tuition from students enrolled in degree studies (such as Master’s or Ph.D. programs). However, Finnish university legislation is being reformed, which may lead to changes in current tuition practices. Please refer to up-to-date tuition information on the universities’ web sites. At the moment, only a few non-degree programs may charge fees, but they are considerably lower than an average tuition at an American university. The student is responsible for finding out if fees apply and for covering those costs.
Finland offers excellent study and research opportunities in a wide range of disciplines. Visit http://www.fulbright.fi/, http://finland.cimo.fi/
