There are four types of Fulbright grants to Egypt. 15 FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS Language Sufficient proficiency in written and spoken Arabic to conduct the proposed study is required. This is especially important for projects in the humanities and social sciences. Academic year Two semesters: September through mid-January, and mid-January through May.
Grant period 9 months. Fulbright grantees should arrive in Egypt in late August or early September to participate in the in-country orientation. They must also attend a pre-departure orientation in Washington DC during the summer of 2010.
Affiliation The Fulbright Commission in Egypt arranges grantees’ affiliations with Egyptian institutions. A letter of invitation from an Egyptian institution may be submitted by the applicant but is not required as part of the application. Students who plan to enroll in graduate programs at institutions in Egypt should contact the university and apply directly to the desired program. They should ensure that they are able to supplement their grants to cover the cost of tuition and fees.
Research clearance A grant cannot be issued until proper Government of Egypt approval is received. Not all fieldwork is permitted, and projects that deal with subjects that are socially, culturally, or politically sensitive may be denied clearance. The Fulbright Commission applies for all necessary research clearances, and facilitates archival work and contact with the Egyptian academic community. At a later stage in the selection process, short-listed candidates will be requested to provide their names, project titles and project abstracts in Arabic, in addition to their project descriptions in English, in non-academic terms for review by Government of Egypt authorities.
Dependents Additional allowances are available for up to two dependents.

2 FULBRIGHT FULL ARABIC LANGUAGE GRANTS Affiliation Students applying for a language grant must be admitted at either the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) or the Arabic Language Institute (ALI). Both programs are hosted at the American University in Cairo. In addition to completing the Fulbright application, applicants should apply directly to the CASA or ALI programs.

Arabic Language Institute (ALI): Students who plan to enroll in the ALI program must pass the ALI entrance examination. CRITICAL LANGUAGE ENHANCEMENT AWARDThe Critical Language Enhancement Award provides an opportunity for Fulbright U.S. Student Program grantees to receive three to six months of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. The award provides a monthly living stipend and tuition reimbursement for grantees to pursue language training in the host country. The policy on dependents is that of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program to Egypt: enhanced monthly stipend for a maximum of 2 dependants and roundtrip travel for a maximum of 1 dependant. Application for a Critical Language Enhancement Award is made in conjunction with the Fulbright U.S. Student application. Egypt Acceptable Languages Arabic – Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and dialect Prior Language Study: A minimum of one year of prior Arabic study is required. For details, see here.
Dates and Timing Grantees may begin language study at any time following the mandatory pre-departure orientation for the Near East and North Africa. Grant duration is a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months. The Critical Language Enhancement Award grant must be taken in full before the Fulbright grant – no period of concurrent study is allowed.
Approved Institutions: Applicants may propose new language programs for approval.
Other Notes Those individuals whose Fulbright grant focus is primarily Arabic language study must complete their Critical Language Enhancement Award after the Fulbright period ends. Grantees must also have research clearance prior to departing for the Critical Language Enhancement Award. Grantees to other countries who are undertaking their Critical Language Enhancement Awards in Egypt cannot transfer their Fulbright grants to Egypt. Fulbright grants directly follow CLEA grants for a continued period of 9 months. Those individuals whose Fulbright project statements propose obtaining graduate studies diplomas/master degrees may not be able to fulfill the requirements of both their full Fulbright and CLEA grants.

10 FULBRIGHT ENGLISH TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS Language Applicants must be articulate native English-speakers. Basic facility in Arabic is required and preference is given to candidates with intermediate level proficiency. As part of the orientation program, ETAs will receive some instruction in colloquial Arabic while in Egypt.
Grant period 10 months, August to June. The grant period starts with a two week orientation organized by the Fulbright Commission. The orientation will include colloquial Arabic language classes, and training in teaching methodologies. Candidate profile Applications will be considered from candidates at all degree levels who have completed a bachelor’s degree before the start date of the grant. Preference will be given to applicants in the social sciences, humanities, English language and American studies. Some teaching experience is preferred.
Grant activity English Teaching Assistants will be placed assisting English language instructors in their classrooms for approximately twelve hours per week at Egyptian public and private universities. Responsibilities may also include giving presentations on topics related to the United States, preparing classroom activities, or participating in on-campus cross-cultural activities. Independent study that does not conflict with assigned teaching responsibilities may also be permitted.
Affiliation The Fulbright Commission will match the grantee with the appropriate Egyptian university. Details of assignment will be subject to communication between the Fulbright Commission and the host institution, based on the academic profile of the selected candidate and the host institution’s needs.
General comments Egyptian government clearance is required for all foreign teachers and researchers.
