Academic year October 1 through July 31.
Grant period 10 months. Fulbright grants will begin between August 2010 and March 2011, subject to the approval of the U.S. Embassy in Yaounde.
Affiliation Researchers must have institutional affiliations in Cameroon before permits will be issued and should indicate in their applications the names and academic titles of individuals and institutions with whom they will work. Because there are so many foreign research projects conducted in Cameroon, the Ministry of Scientific Research and Technological Innovation (MSRTI) requires that American researchers work with a Cameroonian or local scholar.
General comments Applications in all fields of study will be considered but, due to the need in Cameroon, preference is given to researchers in the fields of HIV/AIDS, chemistry, physics, biology, political science, mathematics, and the natural and technical sciences.
Research clearance Research permits are issued through MSRTI and local institutions. Applicants should contact their institution about applying for a research permit providing the area of research and timeline. Universities and research institutions can issue research permits without going through MSRTI. Once the permit is received, researchers can apply for a long-term visa at the Cameroon Embassy in Washington DC with the appropriate documentation. Doing this in advance makes the process upon arrival in Cameroon much faster and easier.
Dependents The Fulbright grant is increased by US$200 per month for one accompanying dependent and by US$300 per month for two or more accompanying dependents.

3 FULBRIGHT ENGLISH TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS
Language English and French are the official languages in Cameroon. Although Cameroon is officially bilingual, French speakers greatly outnumber English speakers and a working knowledge of French is necessary.
Grant period 10 months. The academic year begins in October and ends in July. A country orientation will be provided by the U.S. Embassy in Yaounde.
Candidate profile Graduating seniors or graduate students with an undergraduate degree in English or education who are considering careers in English, education, or TEFL/applied linguistics and who have experience teaching or tutoring. Other fields will be considered if combined with teaching experience and/or coursework in pedagogy. Candidates with an interest in African languages, culture, and history are also encouraged to apply.
Affiliation The host institutions are the University of N’Gaoundéré, the Advanced Teachers Training College (ENS) in Yaoundé, and Higher Teacher’s Training College (ENS) in Maroua. However, other host institutions may be considered if the University of N’Gaoundéré and the Advanced Teachers Training College (ENS) in Yaoundé are unable to host ETAs. See www.us.fulbrightonline.org for more information.
Nature of assignments Approximately 20 hours per week assisting university professors in their classrooms, plus requisite class preparation time and school-related activities. ETAs may assist in a variety of academic formats from one-on-one tutoring to co-teaching large groups to improve the English language academic reading and writing skills of university undergraduates for whom English is both a second language and the medium of instruction at school. ETAs will be assigned as language-learning assistants, but will not be responsible for teaching entire courses. Responsibilities may include giving presentations on topics related to the United States, preparing classroom activities, and/or encouraging students to communicate in English. Placement will be at the university undergraduate level, with some possible outreach to secondary and middle schools (periodic language enhancement camps).
Housing The University of N’Gaoundéré will provide moderate housing on- or off-campus. The U.S. Embassy will assist the ETA in Yaoundé and Maroua to identify secure housing.
