There are three types of Fulbright Grants available to Bulgaria.
5 FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS
Language Proficiency in Bulgarian commensurate with the project needs is desirable. The Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission in Sofia covers a three-week Bulgarian language course at the Department of Language Learning, Sofia University, St. Kliment Ohridski.
Grant period 10 months. October through June. Fulbright grantees are due in Sofia for an orientation program one week before the beginning of the academic year which normally begins on October 1. Grantees are also encouraged to participate in FISI in August (see below).
Candidate profile Candidates at all degree levels are accepted, but preference is given to master’s and Ph.D. candidates. Applications will be considered in all fields, especially the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts. Applications in Slavic, Balkan, and East European studies are particularly welcome.
Affiliation Applicants are encouraged to arrange affiliation and submit letters of invitation. Otherwise, they may indicate preferences for affiliation if an invitation is not available. The Fulbright Commission can assist in establishing contacts at appropriate institutions. The final assignment is coordinated with the Fulbright Commission.
Special opportunities In August, the Fulbright Commission organizes a two-week Fulbright International Summer Institute (FISI). Fulbright grantees are encouraged to participate. 2 FULBRIGHT ENGLISH TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPSLanguage Applicants must be articulate native English-speakers. Knowledge of some Bulgarian is an advantage. Bulgarian language training on an individual or group basis is supported by the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission.
Grant period 10 months, September through June. The grant period starts with the beginning of the school year at the host institution. As part of their orientation program, grantees are encouraged to participate in the Fulbright International Summer Institute.
Candidate profile Applications at all degree levels are accepted, but preference is given to graduate students enrolled in degree programs, irrespective of field of study, who are interested in international education and teaching. Preference is also given to applicants in the social sciences, humanities/English language, and American studies. Some teaching experience is required.
Affiliations Grantees will be placed as English Teaching Assistants at Bulgarian secondary or postsecondary schools and the Fulbright Language Training Center. Their assignments will depend on the respective schools’ needs and will not exceed 15 hours per week of teaching English combined with educational advising. Applicants should submit descriptions of their study and/or career interests. Details of assignments will develop from direct communication between selected candidates and designated host institutions.

Grant period 9 months (first 5 months in Bulgaria; the remaining 4 months in Romania). Candidate profile Candidates at all degree levels are accepted, but preference is given to master’s and Ph.D. candidates. Applications will be considered in the following fields: European studies, East European studies, Balkan studies, Black Sea studies, political science, social sciences, classical studies, the arts, etc.
Affiliation Applicants are encouraged to arrange affiliation and submit letters of invitation. If an invitation is not available, they may indicate preferences for affiliation. The Fulbright Commissions assist in establishing contacts at prospective host institutions and coordinate the final assignments.
