FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS

Language A moderate level of conversational French is needed to function comfortably in the Ivory Coast. Fluent French is required to take or audit classes in universities and institutes or to do research. Researchers in the sciences will generally have colleagues with a working knowledge of English, but primary documents and texts will be in French.

Academic year
October through July. However, due to ongoing turmoil in the country during recent years, classes have been delayed in starting until December or even January/February.

Grant period
10 months. Fulbright grants will begin between August 2010 and March 2011, subject to the approval of the U.S. Embassy in Abidjan.

Affiliation
It is the applicant’s responsibility to secure affiliation with an appropriate host institution. It is strongly recommended that applicants identify appropriate host institutions for their projects and that they include affiliation letters with their Fulbright applications.

Research clearance
Usually acquired from the departments or institutions where researchers intend to work. However, as a courtesy, researchers should also seek clearance from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, through the Public Affairs Officer, Public Affairs Section-Abidjan, Department of State, 2010 Abidjan Place, Dulles VA 20189-2010.

General comments
Candidates may propose to conduct research in TEFL/TESL and help in curriculum development. There are also teaching opportunities in medical sciences, biological sciences and in French studies.

Dependents
the basic amount of the Fulbright grant is increased by US$100 per month for grantees with one accompanying dependent and by US$200 for grantees with two or more accompanying dependents.
