There are 5 types of Fulbright Grants to Spain.

26 FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS

Language Proficient written and spoken Spanish is required at the time of application. Graduate studies in the Catalan and Basque regions usually require a basic understanding of those languages prior to beginning the grant.

Academic year
Early October to June. Semester system.

Grant period
Up to 9 months. Attendance at a Madrid orientation in mid-September is mandatory. Only requests with compelling reasons for initiating the award at a later date in 2010-2011 will be considered. Doctoral courses can begin at any time during the academic year.

Candidate profile
Advanced graduate students, doctoral candidates, and those with previous research experience will be given priority. Graduating seniors will also be considered. Applicants must be mature and self-motivated individuals who are capable of working independently with little supervision. Awards are not offered for the sole purpose of engaging in university coursework, and course listings may not be confirmed until after universities begin. Projects dealing with contemporary issues are especially encouraged.

Affiliation
It is the applicant’s responsibility to secure evidence of any prearranged institutional support in Spain. The project must be specific with reference to the particular kind of materials required and include any correspondence with institutions. The Fulbright Commission in Spain will assist in providing access to archives and making contacts after arrival.

Fine and performing arts
Projects must include a letter of invitation from an academic adviser affiliated with a host institution. In some cases, studies in the fine arts may require additional personal funds to cover the cost of materials, studio space, facilities for rehearsals, and return shipment of the work produced.

Proposal and Personal Statement
in Spanish
Applicants for Fulbright student grants must submit a copy of their research proposal and personal statement in both Spanish and English. When preparing these statements offline in a Word document, you should attach the Spanish language version after the English version. When you upload the documents, you will have up to four pages for the Statement of Grant Purpose and two pages for the Personal Statement.

Visa requirement
Grantees are required to obtain a student visa from a Spanish consulate prior to arrival.
