12 FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS
Language Candidates must have (a) at least an intermediate level of proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) or in spoken Moroccan Arabic (which differs considerably from MSA); or, (b) fluency in French. Candidates should investigate which language is most useful for their research objectives. In some cases, Berber may be desirable. It is not true that Arabic will suffice for all purposes. For example, financial topics require French. A command of both Arabic and French is desirable. For grantees not participating in the Critical Language Enhancement Award initiative (see page 17), the Fulbright Commission in Morocco recommends that those lacking a fair command of Moroccan dialectical Arabic begin their grant periods with a few weeks of intensive coursework in Moroccan Arabic. If notified in advance, MACECE can assist in making necessary arrangements and will cover the cost of tuition and materials. This is recommended for those who are fluent in French and/or have studied MSA for one or two years. However, grantees who arrive with a high level of proficiency in MSA may find it more practical to adapt to the Moroccan spoken dialect of Arabic without classroom language instruction. Any other expenses for language instruction are subject to approval by the Commission.
Grant period 9 months. Grantees are expected to arrive in Morocco in time to attend the orientation meetings in early September. Students proposing field or library research are not bound by the dates of the academic year. Most libraries are closed in August. Students taking the spoken Moroccan Arabic course mentioned above should arrive in early September. All grantees are also expected to attend the mid-year academic retreat held in April, in order to share their research findings to-date with colleagues.
Affiliation The Commission arranges for students to be affiliated with appropriate institutions, usually academic. (For detailed information on Moroccan institutions of higher education, please consult www.dfc.gov.ma. For those conducting library or field research on well-defined topics, such affiliation may be rather loose. A letter of invitation from a Moroccan institution may be submitted by the applicant. However, such letters of affiliation are not required as part of the application.
Special considerations Candidates must include a summary copy of their research proposal in Arabic and/or French as part of their Fulbright applications.
Contact To discuss project feasibility, potential applicants should contact MACECE’s program officer, Saadia Maski, email: s.maski@macece.ma
