10 FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS

Language Sufficient proficiency in Bahasa Indonesian is recommended but not mandatory, depending on the proposed field of study or research.

Grant period
10 months.

Candidate profile
Highly qualified Master’s and Ph.D. candidates currently enrolled in U.S. graduate schools are preferred. Graduating seniors may apply also.

30 FULBRIGHT ENGLISH TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS

Language No Indonesian language skills are required. Students will be provided very basic language instruction in Bahasa Indonesian as a part of the orientation. All instruction is in English regarding teaching methodology.

Candidate profile
Applicants should be graduating seniors or graduate students, mature, articulate, resourceful, flexible, and committed to working in an instructional setting with high school students. Candidates should be native English speakers. No previous teaching experience is required.

Grant period
9½-month academic year, plus two weeks of orientation (total grant period is 10 months), which will commence in August 2010. The start date and duration of the grant may vary due to the fasting month of Ramadan.

Nature of assignments
Approximately 20 hours per week assisting teachers in their classrooms, plus requisite class preparation time and school-related activities. English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) will typically teach conversational English to senior high school students at selected public schools, private schools, and Islamic boarding schools throughout Indonesia, many of which are outside of major cities.

Housing
Housing arrangements will be made by the Fulbright Commission in Indonesia and the schools where ETAs will be placed. Please note: Many ETA sites are in rural areas, so ETAs need to be prepared to adapt to local customs and norms. Often housing situations vary and this also requires flexibility and adaptation on the part of ETAs.

Dependents
Because housing arrangements at public or private school(s) or pesantren or madrasah may include homestay situations and, due to permit restrictions for this program, ETAs may not be accompanied by dependents. Alternative housing arrangements are not permitted.
