70 FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS Language A strong knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is required. Candidates should have the equivalent of at least two or three years of college-level Chinese prior to commencing their Fulbright research. Applicants applying for Critical Language Enhancement Awards to study Mandarin in China should carefully review the guidelines on approved Chinese language programs (http://us.fulbrightonline.org/training.html). Grant period 10 months. Candidates should design projects that begin in early September 2010 or early March 2011, so that their arrival in China will correspond with the beginning of an academic term at their Chinese host institution. Alternative project time lines are acceptable only for Ph.D. candidates or those grantees applying for a Critical Language Enhancement Award. All candidates receiving Critical Language Enhancement Awards to study Mandarin in China will begin their language studies in an approved program in the summer or fall of 2010, and their Fulbright research term will begin immediately after the conclusion of their intensive language program.
Field of study restrictions Business is not recommended. Science and technology are not recommended except in: environmental science, public health and sustainable development. Proposals for enrollment in Chinese graduate degree programs will not be accepted.
Affiliation The Institute of International Education’s Beijing office assists with the process of affiliation for candidates awarded Fulbright grants. Graduating seniors and Bachelor’s-level candidates will affiliate with Chinese universities and will audit classes at their host institutions. In keeping with programmatic efforts to increase regional diversity and promote the Fulbright program across China, applicants are encouraged to affiliate with universities outside of Beijing or Shanghai. Any applicant wishing to affiliate with a university in Beijing or Shanghai should present serious justification as to why the project must be carried out there in the Statement of Grant Purpose. Other factors being equal, priority may be given to applicants with projects outside the major city centers. It is strongly recommended that applicants identify appropriate host institutions for their projects and that they include affiliation letters with their Fulbright applications. Restriction Candidates currently residing in China, Hong Kong or Macau will not be considered. Proposals for intern work at NGO’s or other organizations will not be accepted.

Critical Language Enhancement AwardThe Critical Language Enhancement Award provides an opportunity for Fulbright U.S. Student Program grantees to receive three to six months of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. The award provides a monthly living stipend and tuition reimbursement for grantees to pursue language training in the host country. Application for a Critical Language Enhancement Award is made in conjunction with the Fulbright U.S. Student application. Dates and Timing: Grantees may begin only on the schedules of the institutions named below. Final language study durations will be determined depending on student preferences and institutional options, with the concurrence of the Fulbright Office and U.S. Embassy in Beijing. The Critical Language Enhancement Award grant must be taken in full before the Fulbright grant. Tutoring is not an option.
