FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS

Language English is the official language. Researchers may need Setswana or other local languages to conduct research in rural areas.
Grant period 10 months, August through May. Fulbright grants will begin between August 2010 and March 2011, subject to the approval of the U.S. Embassy in Gaborone.

Candidate profile
Ph.D. candidates who plan to conduct dissertation research and Master’s candidates are preferred; recent graduates who present serious study projects will be considered. All candidates must be mature and able to carry out independent research projects.

Affiliation
It is the candidate’s responsibility to secure affiliation with an appropriate Botswanan institution. Candidates should consider affiliating with a department of the University of Botswana (UB) for coursework/research or the UB Directorate of Research and Development (DRD) for research. Further information is available at www.ub.bw.
Research clearance Candidates must obtain research approval from the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs or the relevant ministry prior to conducting their research. Research clearances normally take several months to secure and it is best to apply a full year in advance. For additional information on the research clearance process, candidates may contact the Educational Attaché, Embassy of the Republic of Botswana in Washington, DC at www.botswanaembassy.org. Information is also available from the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs (Research Permits), Private Bag 002, Gaborone, Botswana.

Dependents
Several schools in Gaborone cater to expatriate children at the primary and secondary levels. Placement in these schools requires pre-entry tests for admission and advance arrangements, at least six months before arrival in country. The school calendar runs from January-April, May-August, and September-December. Although job possibilities for accompanying spouses are limited, volunteer opportunities are numerous.
