There are three types of Fulbright Grants to Taiwan.

12 FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

Language Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese or Taiwanese is recommended but not required; language requirements vary depending upon the applicant’s proposed project. Applicants in traditional Chinese studies are expected to have the level of language skill required by their research, especially if they plan to conduct dissertation research. Students who want to pursue additional Chinese language study must have completed at least one year of basic Chinese before applying for a Fulbright award. See Critical Language Enhancement Awards.

Grant period
10 months. Candidates are expected to begin their grants in September.

Candidate profile
Master’s and Ph.D. students are preferred, but graduating seniors will be considered.

Affiliation
It is strongly recommended that applicants identify appropriate host institutions for their projects and that they include affiliation letters with their Fulbright applications. The Fulbright Commission in Taiwan will assist award recipients with letters of introduction and communication.

Special opportunity for research
If the research project requires it and the Fulbright Commission in Taiwan approves, up to one fifth of the total grant may be spent in mainlandChina, with unsuspended maintenance.

2 FULBRIGHT INTERNSHIPS

Language Applicants must be articulate native English-speakers with superior writing ability. Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese or Taiwanese is recommended but not required.

Grant period
10 months. It is preferred that candidates begin their grants in September.

Candidate profile
Available to those who have a Master’s degree or are currently enrolled in a graduate program, and are interested in: (1) any aspect of the media, including newspapers and other aspects of mass media and multimedia, (must major in journalism or have equivalent professional experience); (2) international education, cross-cultural counseling or TESL.

Affiliation
The positions combine up to 20 to 30 hours per week of work at a nonprofit or governmental organization and another 10 to 20 hours per week devoted to language study or an independent study/research project. Applicants should describe fully their study or career interests and also include well-thought-out plans for their projects so that the Fulbright Commission in Taiwan can make the appropriate placements. Interns are not permitted to take any other employment in Taiwan. In some cases, it may be possible to place an intern, under cost-sharing arrangement, with a commercial media organization.

28 FULBRIGHT ENGLISH TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS

Language No Chinese language skills are required. All class teaching is in English. Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) with at least one academic year of college-level Mandarin experience (or its equivalent) are also eligible for the Critical Language Enhancement Award,

Grant period
11 months. English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) are expected to arrive by August 1, 2010 for orientation. The school year extends from September through June.

Candidate profile
Available to graduating seniors and college graduates, unmarried, and without dependents, who are interested in assisting local English teachers at elementary or junior high schools in Taiwan. Master’s-level candidates are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must be native English speakers. Teaching experience is preferred but not required.

Nature of assignment
Fulbright English Teaching Assistants in Taiwan will be full-time Teaching Assistants in one or more elementary schools or junior high schools assisting local English teachers. They will be in school 35 hours a week, although only about 20 hours will actually be spent in the classroom. Some of the English Teaching Assistant’s other work will be to consult with teachers on American cultural issues and to assist in the editing or writing of educational materials for English teaching. English Teaching Assistants will be placed in schools located in either Yilan County in northern Taiwan or in Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan, or other places in Taiwan.

Independent study
No research or independent study is required. Assistantships are not study/research awards, and teaching takes most of the grantee’s time. Those receiving critical Language Enhancement Awards will supplement their teaching with language study.

Critical Language Enhancement Award

The Critical Language Enhancement Award provides an opportunity for Fulbright U.S. Student Program grantees to receive three to six months of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. The award provides a monthly living stipend and tuition reimbursement for grantees to pursue language training in the host country. Application for a Critical Language Enhancement Award is made in conjunction with the Fulbright U.S. Student application. For additional information and requirements on the award please see Critical Language Enhancement Award details.

Taiwan

Acceptable Languages: Mandarin

Prior Language Study: A minimum of one year of prior Mandarin study is required.  For details, see here.

Dates and Timing: Grantees may start language training at any time after receiving health clearance and submitting all forms. Grant duration is a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months.  The Fulbright Full Grant must remain the full 10 month duration and must end by Sept 30th of the following year.

Notes: Fulbright ETAs with a Critical Language Enhancement Award must conduct a two month intensive language study period in June and July. This will be followed by approximately a one-month break in study due to the mandatory orientation session in August. This will be followed by 1-4 months of 10 hours per week of tutoring concurrent with the Fulbright award beginning in September. Because the teaching must remain the priority, tutoring must be conducted on evenings or weekends. ETAs must apply and pay for visitors visas in June. The Fulbright Commission will assist grantees in changing their status to residence visas shortly before the Fulbright grant begins on August 1.
