Preparing An Application - Enrolled or At-Large Printer-Friendly Version

PREPARING AN APPLICATION FOR ENROLLED OR AT-LARGE APPLICANTS

Enrolled Applicants
If you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a U.S. college or university, you must apply through the Fulbright Program Adviser (FPA) on your campus. There are very few exceptions to this requirement, so please make every effort to work with your FPA to meet your internal campus deadline. Recent graduates may contact their former institution to determine if they are eligible to apply as an Enrolled Applicant.

or

At-Large Applicants
If you are not currently enrolled in a U.S. institution of higher learning, you are At-Large and must apply directly through IIE.

Currently Enrolled Applicants and Applicants Applying Through Their Alma Mater

If you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a U.S. college or university, you must apply through the Fulbright Program Adviser (FPA) on your campus.

Click here to find the FPA on your campus

FPAs at U.S. institutions:
  • Work with students to promote interest in applying for U.S. Student Fulbright awards
  • Provide general advice about the U.S. Student Fulbright Program and application procedures
  • Convene a faculty committee to evaluate applications and interview candidates and prepare written evaluations and ratings of each candidate

Campuses set an internal
Fulbright application deadline for their students, which may be up to 6-8 weeks earlier than the IIE deadline.
  • Consult the FPA or the University Page on this website to determine the deadline at your college or university
  • Campus deadlines usually fall between mid-September and early October

Enrolled applicants
must:
  • Ensure that all supporting documents, e.g., Foreign Language Evaluation, references, transcripts, etc., are attached to their online application*
  • Meet internal Fulbright campus deadlines
  • Submit the application electronically in order to provide the FPA with access to it
  • Attend a campus interview

*Note: References and the Foreign Language Evaluation (FLE) must be electronically submitted in the separate Online Reference System by the person completing the form (i.e., the person you register).  This submission can take place before or after the applicant submits the Online Application, but no later than the deadline on October 17, 2011.

Applicants must make sure that their Online Application is electronically SUBMITTED by October 17, 2011 (5:00 p.m., Eastern Time), at the latest. This deadline also applies to all supporting credentials, including online submission of references, Foreign Language Evaluation, and transcript.

Already Graduated?

Applicants who have already graduated may apply through their alma mater, provided the campus Fulbright Program Adviser (FPA) will accept applications from alumni. Fulbright Program Advisers are not obligated to work with alumni, but will often do so as a courtesy. Candidates should contact the Fulbright Program Adviser at their alma mater directly for his or her policy on working with alumni.

If the FPA agrees, alumni applicants must:

  • Meet the campus deadline
  • Follow campus instructions for the submission of their applications and support documents
  • Make themselves available for the campus interview

At-Large Applicants

You may apply At-Large, if you are not currently enrolled in a U.S. institution of higher learning or are unable to apply through your home campus or alma mater.  This status includes U.S. students studying at institutions outside of the U.S. or students attending institutions where there is not a Fulbright Program Adviser.

At-Large Applicants must:
  • Ensure that all supporting documents, e.g., references, foreign language reports, transcripts, etc. are all attached to their electronic applications
  • Submit the Online Application electronically by October 17, 2011 (5:00 p.m., Eastern time), at the latest

At-Large applicants are encouraged to:
  • Attend one of the U.S. Student Fulbright Guidance Sessions held between May and October at the Institute of International Education headquarters in New York or at one of the IIE Regional Centers
  • Participate in scheduled U.S. Student Fulbright Webinars dealing with particular world regions; aspects of the applications; fields of study, such as Business, Science, or the Creative and Performing Arts, etc.
  • Listen to application procedure podcasts, review Applicant Newsletters, and Blog, and view video interviews with former grantees and others
  • Identify a faculty member or adviser to provide you with feedback on your application and project Statement of Grant Purpose

IIE staff cannot provide specific feedback on proposals or applications.

If you have country-specific questions on the Fulbright Program that are not answered by the Country Summary section, you should contact the relevant IIE Program Manager.

The deadline for submission of the online application is 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on October 17, 2011.
