Preparing an Application in Writing or the Creative and Performing Arts

Applications in the creative, performing and visual arts, and in writing and journalism are welcome to all countries in the U.S. Student Fulbright Program. For more information on preparing applications in these areas, consider the information below.  Also review the section on Developing Statement of Grant Purpose for a Study/Research Project.

Applications in Creative and Performing Arts

READ the individual Country Summary for specific information.

FOCUS the project on practical training or performance studies.
Generally this is the case for applications in music and the performing arts. However, in some fields, for example Creative Writing, Photography or Filmmaking, the project may center on background research for and production of a publication or body of work.

OUTLINE a statement where your previous experience and/or training complements and supports the proposed project and will add to your professional training and development.

STATEMENT OF GRANT PURPOSE in the arts should include the following:

  • The reasons for choosing a particular country
  • The nature of the study and the form the work will take, e.g., formal study at an institution, study with an individual, independent research and/or studio or field work
  • How your current training relates to the study or project you plan to undertake abroad
  • The expected results or outcome of your project
  • The contribution the foreign experience will have on your future professional development
  • The ways that you may engage in the host country community and culture A timeline for your proposed project/study plan

Applicants whose projects emphasize academic research over practical training should apply in the academic field appropriate to the nature of the project (e.g., Architectural History, Art History, Film Studies, Theater Studies, etc.) and may not submit supplementary material.

HOST COUNTRY AFFILIATIONS are required.
Where possible, provide letters of support from the individual or institution with whom or where you plan to carry out your study. While sources of support/affiliation are specific to the country of application, you may also include organizations such as museums, music groups, galleries, etc.

FIELD OF STUDY: Care should be taken when identifying the appropriate field of study in the application.
In the first stage, applications and supplementary materials in the fields list below are reviewed by a discipline-specific committee of experts from the U.S. The field should be germane to the focus of the proposed project and consistent with the applicant's background and training.

The discipline-specific committees in the creative, performing and visual arts include:

  • Architecture
  • Creative Writing
  • Dance & Performance Art
  • Design, including Crafts
  • Ethnomusicology
  • Filmmaking
  • Music Composition & Conducting
  • Painting & Printmaking
  • Photography
  • Piano
  • Organ & Harpsichord
  • Sculpture & Installation Art
  • Theater, including Acting, Directing & Costume/Set Design
  • String Instruments
  • Voice
  • Wind Instruments

NATIONAL SCREENING COMMITTEE (NSC) Stage 1 of the Selection Process
Members of the discipline-specific screening committees in the arts can be working professionals, working/teaching professionals or full-time faculty at academic institutions or schools and music conservatories in the U.S. NSC sub-committees in the arts will review applications and supplementary materials in their respective fields to all countries of the world.

SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS are required for all fields (optional for Ethnomusicology) and should support the proposed study and/or project.

In preparing your supplementary materials, please refer to the Instructions for Submitting Supplementary Material in the Creative and Performing Arts for specifications on both the method and format of submitting materials and the types of materials that will be accepted for your particular field. Materials not specifically requested will not be reviewed.

PRIOR TRAINING in the field is essential for applicants in the arts.

In addition to evaluating your skill and talent in your field based on the presentation of the submitted materials and references, you should be aware that members of the screening committees will assess the your  training and preparation to carry out the proposed project. Therefore, previous formal study, training or experience is an important factor in the consideration of arts candidates.

Applications in Creative Writing and Journalism

Creative writers and journalists are encouraged to apply for the Fulbright program to carry out major writing projects overseas:

  • Writers need to establish an affiliation in the host country to support and/or supervise their proposed projects and/or research.
  • Creative Writing applicants must submit work samples. Journalists may not submit samples. **
  • Journalism applicants should have strong letters of recommendation attesting to their background and ability.
  • Grantees are free to publish work produced during the grant tenure at any time.
  • Creative writing is considered an Arts field for the purpose of preparing the application, supplementary materials, and NSC sub-committee review. Please review the section above, “Creative and Performing Arts,” if you are proposing a project in Creative Writing.

** Applicants who are recommended for the Young Journalists Grants in Germany will be asked to submit a work sample.  See Germany Country Summary on the Award.
