COMPETITION TIMELINE, 2011 - 2012

May to October 2010

Work on your application

YOU SHOULD BEGIN AN APPLICATION AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, BUT:
  1. At least 2 months prior to the campus or IIE deadline: for full research and study grants or grants in the Creative and Performing Arts.
  2. At least 6 weeks prior to the campus or IIE deadline: for Teaching Assistantships or Travel Grants.
  3. Contact potential referees and Foreign Language Evaluators
  4. Obtain letter(s) of affiliation when required
  5. Order transcripts from all post secondary, credit granting institutions that you have attended
September/ October 2010

Enrolled application deadline

Enrolled students must submit applications to their campus FPAs by the campus deadline. This deadline may be up to six to eight weeks prior to the general Fulbright application deadline. FPAs will send hard copy applications for Fulbright Full and Travel Grants from enrolled students to the New York office of IIE by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on October 21, 2010. FPAs may open supporting documents for review by the Campus Committee during their interview.

September/ October 2010

Enrolled applicant campus interview

For Enrolled applicants, your campus FPA will convene a Campus Committee to interview all candidates.  This interview will take place prior to the Fulbright application deadline.   At-Large applicants will not be interviewed.

October 19, 2010

Online application deadline for all candidates (Enrolled and At-Large)

Online Application Submission Deadline (all candidates)

The online application for ALL applicants must be submitted electronically by 12:00 midnight Pacific time on Monday, October 19, 2010 (Monday night).  Be sure to print out a hard copy before submitting the application electronically.  

You will receive an email confirmation from the Online Application System when you complete all the steps leading to the electronic submission of the application.  Failure to electronically submit your application by the deadline could result in the disqualification of your application.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO ELECTRONICALLY SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION.   The system will shut down at the time indicated.  Plan to complete submission well in advance.

October 21, 2010

All candidates hard copy application deadline.

At-large applicants and FPAs send complete paper copy application packages to IIE.

All application documents are submitted in a single application package. Applications must arrive at the New York office of IIE by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on October 21, 2010. Applications may be hand-delivered. 

November/ December 2010

Stage 1 Application Review

Applications are reviewed by committees in the U.S.  Results are collated and panels of recommended candidates for each country receiving U.S. Student grantees are compiled.

January 2011

Stage 2  Review Begins

Applications of recommended candidates are transmitted to the supervising agencies abroad, to the US State Department and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) for further review

January 31, 2011

Stage 1 Decision Notification

Applicants from the 2011-2012 competition will receive email notification indicating whether or not they have been recommended to the host country.

January to June 2011

Stage 2 Notification

As results of the selection and approval process are received, recommended candidates will be notified of their status: 

  1. Selected to receive a grant
  2. Designated as an alternate to receive consideration if a selected candidate declines the grant offered.  Alternates remain on the list until March 2011, since a declination or withdrawal can occur at any time prior to the closing of the competition.
  3. Non-selected by the host country, and, therefore, are no longer under consideration.
March to June 2011 

Selected candidates

  1. Have Medical Certificate completed to receive clearance (within 4 weeks of selection notification)
  2. Graduating seniors submit final transcripts with bachelor’s degree award certification (by end of June or within 2 weeks of selection notification)
June/July 2011

Pre-Departure Orientation

Pre-departure Orientation Meetings in Washington DC, for specific countries only.  Candidates invited to the PDO will be notified when selected of the PDO dates and arrangements. Attendance is generally required.

July 2011 to March 2012

Grants begin

Grantees may begin their grants with host country concurrence.  Consult the Country Summary for specific restrictions on grant dates.



If you are recommended for further consideration for a grant in the first round of the selection process, then you must notify IIE immediately of:
  • changes of email address and present and permanent address, including telephone numbers, if possible;
  • changes in marital status or in accompanying dependents;
  • changes in anticipated academic progress;
  • award of any other grant(s) for study during the same academic year;
  • any other change which affects your application in any way.
