How to Apply—General Guidelines
Application Elements As you work on the application form and supporting materials, you should consider the following issues and should consult the Participating Country Summaries for country specific information.
- Adequate formal training for the proposed activity is essential
- If academic credit is desired for work done while on the Fulbright, students must make their own arrangements with their home institutions, preferably in advance of departure
Proposed Project Developing a strong, feasible and compelling project is the most important aspect of a successful Fulbright application:
Graduating seniors (those who will receive a bachelor’s degree by the beginning date of the grant):
who are not applying for English Teaching Assistantships:
- Will generally be expected to attend regular university lectures
- Should describe the study programs they wish to follow in terms as specific as possible
- Should develop plans that can be completed in one academic year in one country. Exceptions may be available for the Creative or Performing Arts
- Should provide a general timeline for the project in the Statement of Proposed Study
- Should be prepared to supplement lectures with an independent study or research project
- Should not expect close academic supervision
who are applying for English Teaching Assistantships:
- Should describe their reasons for applying for an English Teaching Assistantship
- Should be prepared to supplement their ETA responsibilities with an independent study or research project
- Should not expect close academic supervision
Advanced degree candidates proposing research for theses and dissertations: - Will be expected to work independently without close supervision
- Should develop plans that can be completed in not less than six months nor more than one academic year in one country
- Should provide a general timeline for the project in the Statement of Proposed Study

Special Programs Determine if you wish to flag your application for one of the Special Programs available as indicated below. These are listed on page 1 of the Application Form. Remember you may apply for a Study or Research Grant or an English Teaching Assistantship, not both.
Language Skills
- Must be commensurate with the requirements of your project
- Are an element of the feasibility of your project
- Contribute to the mission of the Fulbright Program to increase mutual understanding, by allowing communication with the people of your host community
- Additional language training may be available in some country programs or for targeted languages through the pre-grant Critical Language Enhancement Award
Fields of Study
- All fields of study are acceptable, unless otherwise noted in the Participating Country Summaries
- If a field is listed as “not recommended”, check with IIE before filing an application in that field
Engagement in the Community
- The primary aim of the Fulbright Program is to further mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries
- Becoming involved with your community will contribute significantly to this goal and will enhance your experience in many ways
- Candidates at all degree levels should include in their applications a clear commitment to the host country community
- Candidates should include some examples of how they might interact with their host communities through volunteer or extra-curricular activities
Host Country Affiliation
- All grantees must have a host country affiliation
- English Teaching Assistants will be placed by the supervising agency in the host country and should not try to arrange their own placements
- Applicants for study or research awards will, in most cases, be responsible for arranging their own host country affiliations and for providing documentation of the affiliation with the application, if possible
- Types of affiliations vary, but may include universities, libraries, laboratories, NGOs, museums, and others as approved by the supervising agency in the host country. See Tips for the Affiliation for details
Important DatesDeadlines All candidates are responsible for collecting supporting documents, e.g., foreign language report (if applicable), references and transcripts, etc., and submitting them with their applications. All supporting documents must be received in their original sealed envelopes with the signature or stamp of the individual or institution across the flap. Enrolled students should submit their documents to their FPA by the campus deadline. FPAs may open these documents for review by the Campus Committee during their interview.
- The online application for ALL applicants must be submitted electronically by 11:59 p.m. Pacific time on Monday, October 20, 2008. Be sure to print out a hard copy before submitting the application electronically
- Enrolled students must submit applications to their campus FPAs by the campus deadline. FPAs will sned hard copy applications for Fulbright Full and Travel Grants from enrolled students to the New York office of IIE by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on October 22, 2008
- At-Large students should submit all documents in a single application package by October 22, 2008. Applications must arrive at the New York office of IIE by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on October 22, 2008. Applications may be hand-delivered
Grant Period
- For 2009-2010, grants must begin between July 2009 and no later than March 31, 2010
