The Fulbright/Camoes - Institute for Cooperation and Language Study / Research Award is designed to give U.S. citizens opportunities for personal development through educational and cultural exchange.

Projects may include university coursework, scientific research in a research center, independent library or field research, classes in a music conservatory or art school, or a combination of these.

Grant Period

8 Months

The grant period is October through May.

Grantees are required to attend a mandatory on-site orientation in Lisbon, in late September, before the beginning of their grant.

Candidate Profile

Applications are welcome from candidates at all degree levels who have completed a Bachelor's degree before the start date of the grant.

Projects should be in one of the following fields: linguistics, history, contemporary history, sociology, literature, political science, international relations, communication, language teaching pedagogy, fine arts, performing arts and distance education.

These fields are limited to subjects related to Portuguese language and culture and preference will be given to projects that are especially relevant to Portuguese-American cultural relations.

Required - Intermediate

Language proficiency in Portuguese, commensurate with the proposed study, is necessary by the beginning date of the grant.

Candidates are responsible for arranging their own host affiliations and must submit letters of invitation/affiliation with their applications.

Fulbright grantees may register as special students, and thus be able to attend courses relevant to their projects but are responsible for the payment of any tuition fees associated.

Other institutions not listed can still be considered suitable hosts. Confirm with the Fulbright Commission in Portugal before seeking a letter of invitation.

Affiliation Fees/Tuition

Tuition fees are not covered by the grant benefits.


Applicants living in Portugal at the time of the application are not eligible for consideration.
